Hi
I've not tried anything in France before. I know one branch of the family had links there, but now I think there's a birth, which would fit with the family. I don't think there will be a baptism, as the IGI has a baptism back in England when the child was two.
I know there have been some very good posts on this subject and I've read many of them and looked at links.
Could some kind soul; bear with me though and confirm I've got this right and fill in the spaces as I can't find them all now.
Have I got this right? I think the birth is in St Omer. If I've got it right there will be civil records for early 19C, and I will have to write to a town hall or similar for the department, unless I'm lucky with the boards mentioned?
Also, for St Omer, would it be Pas de Calais I would have to write to, and can anyone give me a link to the address?
Also, do I have to send money, and what form is allowed and how much, or can anyone give me a link to a page with it on?

There are four St. Omer in France:
1. St. Omer (Calvados, Basse Normandie)
2. St. Omer (Pas-de-Calais)
3. St. Omer-Capelle (Pas-de-Calais)
4. St. Omer-en-Chaussée (Oise, Picardie)
You have to write to the Archives Départementales:

2. Archives Départementale Pas-de-Calais
3. Archives Départementale Pas-de-Calais

Actually, I'd recommend writing to the Mairie (town hall) of St. Omer first, as some of the Archives Départementales won't do research. Include return postage (international reply coupons).

ETA: if you have a LDS family history center near you, you can probably also get the records on microfilm.

How good is that? No time after I gave up Thank you Svenja for the kind offers of help too. the kind
I'll look at all you've given me, and have a think and get back.
I never thought of you r first reply though. Four St Omers! I should have. We have endless Skeltons, Hottons etc up here!
So the first thing is homework, and find out which St Omer! I only discovered the St Omer from two recently found census returns - one illegible and mis transcribed, one only recently identified after finding her marriage. By coincidence though, while doing searches to put this up. I found a reference to one for the family, so I will look at that and some books.
I'll get back later.

Hi and thank you again for all that.
I'm still not at the stage of being able to send off.
I've looked at all the family links and papers, and I think I'll have to have at least one educated guess.
I know that later family would have had an interest in the one where the RC seminary/college was, but the parents I'm after were of one of the Scottish churches and a strict agnostic. But maybe it's the same place.
I know that definitely, this would be a place frequented by writes and artists.
Coulkd anyone with mopre knowledge tell me if that suggests any one of the group of St Omers please?

Thank you everyone who replied before. I can't believe that this was nearly eighteen months ago.
I've tried to narrow down wehich St Omer from a family point of view, but found no clues.
So now I'm trying to choose one. I was quite pleased I'd found threwe on a map today and decided, but now I find the old post and there were four!
To help my elimination, can anyone tell me please whether any on these in particular would have been especially popular with Victorian Artists and poets, especially the Pre-Raphaelites?
I think it must be one of the larger ones to be mentioned with no other reference on English censuses. Possibly one of the twosimply caller "Saint Omer".

The good one could be Saint-Omer, Pas-de-Calais

That's the one I'm guessing at. I must admit, I can't find the fourth in my French Atlas.
I will look into doing something about that!
