Missing McCorkindales aka McCorquodales
« on: Friday 08 February 08 04:50 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I have been trying to locate the marriages of my gt-grandfather's sisters without success -have bought several "dud" certificates from Scotlands People. Have done similarly with census info. So where did they go? Who did they marry?

The ones I'm looking for are the daughters of James McCorkindale (McCorquodale) who was born in Inishail 1808 and his wife, Isabella Morrison from Strachur. They ultimately wound up at Ardkinglas estate, Cairndow, Loch Fyne and are there in future censuses with various children. Isabella died in 1853 and is buried in the churchyard at Cairndow.

The girls are:
Catherine McCorkindale b 1832 baptised Strachur
Anne McCorkindale b1834 baptised Strachur
Janet/Jessie McCorkindale b1845 Kilmorich (Cairndow)
Isabella McCorkindale b1847 Kilmorich (Cairndow)

It is quite possible they moved to Glasgow & may have emigrated either to England or overseas. Their brother, Duncan, my gt-grandfather, moved to Glasgow & died there but his wife and children subsequently emigrated to Australia. I believe it is Duncan's brother Malcolm and his wife Catherine Gillies who moved first to Gloucestershire and then to Australia.

So the girls could be anywhere really. I have found Jessie in Glasgow in 1861 but have not had any luck with the others.

I'm hoping that some of this will ring bells with a person who has them in their family tree. Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Linda

Thanks for your trouble-yes I have that census and also 1861,1871,1881 census for James and different daughters until he died in 1889.

Unfortunately I can't find the daughters who are absent from the above censuses anywhere else. Does that make sense. ie I need to find where they went and if they married, and who, after they left Cairndow area.

They were last sighted there (addendum-at Cairndow) as follows:
Catherine and Jessie (1851 census at Strone near Ardkinglas)
Ann (1851 census as a kitchenmaid at Ardkinlgas)
Isabella (1861 census)

Sorry to have been ambiguous

Hi there

Could you clarify your post please?  You state the last you've found of Jessie in one place is:

Catherine and Jessie (1851 census at Strone near Ardkinglas)

but earlier you state:

So the girls could be anywhere really. I have found Jessie in Glasgow in 1861 but have not had any luck with the others.

Best wishes
Jean

hi Jean

I am obviously being unclear, sorry. The dates I listed in the most recent message were when last found in the Cairndow area where they grew up. (There is another sister but I know what happened to her so won't confuse the picture further)

Jessie is the only one I've found anything further about beyond her residence at Cairndow. She is on the 1861 census in Glasgow at 427 St Vincent Street as a servant but beyond that I have nothing on her at all.

It is where they went after they left their home base of Cairndow that I am interested in, especially whether they married, and whom and where. They may even have died young --I don't know. They may also have emigrated (England? Australia? Canada?) but again I have no info on this.

Hope this helps

Hi Pauleen
sorry I have not forgotten about you
I started looking through info I have on my McCorkindale's
I decided to check the BMD's at the James Watt Library site
and now I am totally confused as I have found half of mine are
McCorquodale's too
do you know your Duncan 's occupation might help narrow it down

hi Elaine

Duncan was a joiner. I have pretty much what I need about him -other than burial info. It is mainly his sisters I'm trying to find. Duncan's 1st wife was an Annie Law and his 2nd Annie Sim.

Cheers

Thanks for all your trouble Elaine. I guess one of them must be the right one but no way of knowing without getting the certificates -I did buy a few which proved to be incorrect so that just got too expensive.

"Talk" soon
