Joseph Laurence Head. M. 50. Labourer. B. Gloucester, Chedworth Evice Laurence Wife. M. 60 B. Gloucester, Chedworth
There is no Alfred Lawrence or Laurence aged 35 born Chedworth.
However, found:

Alfred first:
1871 census RG10. P. 2651 Fol 17. Pg.2
GLOVER Alfred Head M. 45 Parish Clerk Sarah Wife 45 Ann Dau 14 Scholar Philip Son 9 ~ Joseph Alfred Son 1
All born Chedworth, Glos. and living in Chedworth
Now - regarding the reverting to his grandmother's maiden name: I don't think he reverted at all, I don't think he ever was Alfred Lawrence.
There is an extracted record on the IGI of his baptism:
Alfred Glover Baptised 15 May 1825 Chedworth. Mother Avies Glover - no father named
and also an extracted record:
Avice Glover married 14 Nov 1833 Chedworth to Joseph Lawrence.
Alfred is Alfred Glover all along - on all censuses and his marriage - also an extracted record - to Sarah Smith in Chedworth 27 March 1852.
Joseph Lawrence was his step father (which explains the relationship son-in-law on the 1851 census - son-in-law sometimes meant step-son)
I'll go and look for the death reg. now, as requested.
