Bertram Merrills marriage index
« on: Monday 03 December 07 18:34 GMT (UK) »

Hello to my fellow Cheshire researchers  Smiley

I'm thinking of buying the above resource, does anybody know if it covers the whole of Cheshire or are there a few parishes not covered?  I'm particulary interested in Ashton Upon Mersey, Altrincham, and Antrobus areas.

Many thanks

Hi Jo,

It probably depends which period you are looking at.  There is also the North and East Cheshire Marriage Index (NECMI) which has:

Ashton upon Mersey 1754 - 1837
Macclesfield St Michael 1835 - 1837
Sutton (Macclesfiel) St George 1835 - 1837

Prestbury was the parish church for Macclesfield covered from 1754 - 1837
For Macclesfield see: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/chs/macclesfield.html

Antrobus church was only built in 1848 so Great Budworth would have been the church used for marriages and is covered 1754 -1837.

Most of the indexes only cover up to 1837 as then you can find records on the GRO or local records office indexes.

Bertram Merrell has some earlier coverage but isn't as comprehensive.

Hope this helps, you can always ask for lookups though!
