Hello Cathy,
Sorry, but no further forward. However have put the children of this couple here to see if it helps others lurkers. From the IGI:
Helen b. 1815 Thomas b. 1817 Mary ch. 1819 John b. 1820 James Barrack Gray ch. 1822 Alexander b. 1828 Christian ch. 1830
The more info you include the easier to check using naming patterns :O)
Have searched the IGI without success.
From www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk - The only female Auld in your timeframe is a Jane Auld born in Aberdeenshire in 1794 - but not in Longside. (I'm on a self imposed credit limit to the website - sorry).
Where/when did your Jean die?
Regards, Steve

Hello Cathy,
Tried death for Jean Gray on SP without success.
However, 'Jane Gray' - other name Auld born 1793 =/- 5 yrs = only one death entry in Scotland between 1855 and 1890. On 31 Oct 1876 (aged 83), . Living at a place called Rora. Widow of John Gray (crofter). Her father Thomas Auld - mother Mary Murray. A son in law was witness.
I don't know if she is yours - but if you pm me I will send the copy. Of note there is an amendement to this entry. (Went back onto SP and downloaded the RCE entry - sad reading)
FYI, the free 1841 census at www.freecen.org.uk has this Jane and husband John, aged 48 yrs at Rora with daughter Christian. His occupation at the time, drystone dyker.
For various reasons will not be able to help with this thread - perhaps others can with census and suggestions?
Good luck.
Regards, Steve ......................................................................................................................
My Smiths - mmmh... bit of a brick wall with mine, ends with a 9 yr old agric lab on the 1841 census called Joseph Smith.
His parents were a David Smith and Ann Moir of whom I can find no trace. I need to start back on my own family :O)

Hello Seaeagle,
Jean Auld is my greatx5 grandmother.
I don't have a date of birth for her, but her date of death would suggest that she was born in 1790.
Jean Auld, widow of John Gray, died on 31st October 1876 aged 86 in Longside. Her death certificate gives her parents as Thomas Auld (Crofter) and Mary Murray. I have been unable to find out more on this couple.
I descend from Christina Gray (c.1833-1885).

Hi SeaEagle, I will give you my assumptions on the ancestors of Jean Auld and John Gray. By no means take this as gospel!
Jean Auld Born 29/08/1790 at St. Fergus, dau. of Thomas Auld and Christian Murray. (Her death details give the mother as Mary). Also, this Jane was born of an act of 'fornication', so I'm guessing she was illegitimate. Unfortunately the line ends there.
John Gray Born 23 Aug 1789, Longside, Wester Rora., son of John Gray and Helen Wilkin (given as Walker on death cert). John Gray Snr, born 24 Dec 1741 at Rora, Longside. Son of Alexander Gray (Tailor).
Unfortunately that is as far as I have got.
I do have two prospective births for out Thomas Auld, both in Peterhead. The first born in 1850, and the second in 1773. This would make the former aged 40 at Jean's birth and the latter 17. I'm not plumping for either of them yet.
