1851 Census for Gloucester Gaol
« on: Saturday 09 February 08 04:41 GMT (UK) »

Is there a website for the 1851 Census for Gloucester Gaol. We have reason to believe relatives could be there by the surname of Huntley

Gloucester Record Office in its online database certainly has a Samule Huntley in gaol in 1841 and a Thomas Huntley in 1861. Nothing during the 1851 census period though.

http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/index.cfm?ArticleID=1335

But do you mean prisoners or working at the gaol?

If you give details of the family you are interested in I am sure someone would be willing to do a look up for you on the census to confirm where the Huntleys you are interested in were in 1851.

Regards

If you think that any of these prisoners were your relatives, I'll  be happy to look up their gaol records for you in the Gloucester Archives.

1838 huntley james U Upton-on-Severn Q/Gc5/6 sailmaker Gaol
1841 huntley samuel U Gloucester Q/Gc5/6 sailmaker Gaol
1861 huntley thomas U Gloucester Q/Gc6/4 merchants foreman Gaol
1861 huntley thomas U Gloucester Q/Gc6/4 merchants foreman Gaol
1861 huntley thomas U Gloucester Q/Gc6/4 merchant seaman Gaol
1869 huntley james U Gloucester Q/Gc6/5 labourer Gaol

These records give quite a lot of information about the appearance and background of the prisoner and his crime.

If on the other hand your family were not prisoners but working/living at the gaol, then they should appear there in the 1851 census.  I don't have Ancestry to check this, but would suggest that you try the Gloucestershire board with as much detail as you can supply.

Thank you so much to Valda and Gillg.
To Gillg
Definitely James 1838 Sailmaker and Samuel 1841 Sailmaker were relatives and I would like you to do a lookup. Do I contact you offline for this info as I suppose it could be sensitive.
Many Thanks

That's up to you, CyndyB.  If you prefer to keep the info secret, I can send it to you in a Personal Message which only you can see.

The info should include age, height, eye, complexion and hair colouring, description of the crime and the sentence, also the person's conduct, religion, whether he could read or write and possibly some other family background.

I shall be in the RO towards the end of the week, and will be happy to look up the records for you.

Yes! I think it may be wise for the results to be sent in a personal message so that only I can see it.
Could I also ask you add the 1869 James Huntley to the look-up, who appears to be a labourer at the gaol. Many many thanks. CyndyB
