Hi

I'm trying to find my Mum's relatives who moved from Dawley in the 1870's to Nottinghamshire to work in the local mines. My maternal Great Grandfather was called John Sankey born circa 1850 and we believe his Mother was called Eliza Sankey. My maternal Great Grandmother was born Elizabeth Roberts we think also born in Dawley

Thanks

John Sankey was born in Dawley in c1850 & shows up on the 1901 census living in Stanton Hill, Nottinghamshire. His daughter Mildred was my grandmother. Unfortuntately every other boy in the Sankey family seems to be called John! John Sankey married Elizabeth Roberts who was also born in Dawley c1872 and moved to Notts along with we think his brother George c 1874/5. Unfortunately we don't know the name of John's father

I have Dunnings from that area on my tree although my main interest is in Grocott (many alternative spellings),  Powis and Wallett or Cadwallader: I also have Thomas, Evans and Jones but very little to go on.

Hi alisia41
So you dont have John and Elizabeths marriage certificate? or you do have it and no fathers name is entered?
You say John Sankey b 1850   =m= Elizabeth Roberts b 1849 (you have written 1872)
Year 1876 Qtr 1st vol 6a page 1131 district Wellington Shropshire
What was Elizabeths fathers name?
I don't see the family on 1891 or 1881 census would be helpful if you had father or mothers name
to look at 1871 census and earlier.
But maybe someone out there may see them!

we don't have John & Elizabeth's marriage certificate. Neither do we know John or Elizabeth's father's name, the only reason we know Elizabeth was a Roberts because a few of them moved up to Notts at the sametime & the families were still close in the 1930's when my Mum was born.
Also we can't find them on any census before 1901 Embarrassed Sorry Elizabeth was born in 1849 & we think they married in 1872/3 because my Nan always said her eldest sibling was born in Dawley & the family were most likely in Notts by 1875.
It times like this I wish I'd quizzed my late mum & uncles more.

Hi
I understand what you say but I think that to move on with your quest you really need that marriage certificate

I see no otherwqay an investment of £7 pounds will help you  narrow down the family, on both sides John's father and Elizabeths father looking at the 1871 census will I am sure open up a new page of family history.
Without basic info it is very hard to track the family down.
Its only a suggestion but I see no other way.
Good luck

I think we'll end up paying Dawley a visit too at some point! I've found it soo much easier to trace my Father's family who came over from Ireland in the 1920's
