Hi Shirley

What sort of time frame are we looking at? The Hem is not familiar to me and Ive not come across it in my own research.

Jones & Bailey are names that are still around in Dawley indeed I have a marriage to a Bailey in my own tree,  let me know some names and I will see if I can found out anything for you.

Hi Shirley,

There's a place called 'The Hem' between Shifnal and Madeley, only a couple of miles from Dawley; also there's a Hem Lane off the A4169 Shifnal-Halesfield road.

Hi,
I have Susannah Bailey, from the Dawley/Shifnal area, daughter of John Bailey and Susannah Pitchford. John was my 5x G grandfather. If this is indeed your family I have many others associated with them. And with the Pugh family into which Susannah married.

Let me know if this is of interest.

best regards

I have a Susanna Bayley who was born around 1765.  She married Edward Jones on Nov 12, 1787 in the Shifnal Parish.  All of their children were born in The Hem area.  Hopefully there is a fit.  Thanks

Hi Sharmar,

I've been reading your posts on here with regard to Dawley, and I would be interested to know if you could help me with my research. My ancestors originated from Pool Hill, and my great grandparents were a George Harris/Elizabeth Morgan, married in 1872 in the Parish Church at Wellington. Any ideas which church that would be and whether it's still standing? My mother recalls visiting the area as a child (approx 1930), and there being a church at the bottom of Pool Hill, towards Dowsley? Would this be the same church?..if not, is that still there?  She also recalls there being a Pub across the road from the church............she thought it was the Cheshire Cheese , but seems unlikely!!

You also seem to have Harris as one of your research areas, maybe our trees cross in some way! I'd love to hear from you.

Ian, Blackpool.

Right now the church your mom refers to is probably St Lukes at Doseley (try google I think it comes up) which has now been converted to a private property (still a burial ground though and I think it is still in use!) and yes there is and still is a pub called The Cheshire Cheese!!!  Where do you get Wellington from as this is a town 2-3 miles away from Pool Hill so your mom has one or two details confused but never mind she'll be chuffed she got the name of the pub right!

My Harris' are from Madeley which is a couple of miles up the road from Dawley but Morgan does ring a bell let me check that out and I will get back to you.

I do hope you like your visit as I have said previously please excuse all the building work etc going on but fortunately they haven't destroyed everything and we have some lovely walks, Pool Hill is very pretty at this time of year.

erinryan

Guess what?  I have Deakins in my tree!  Let me have some details and I will see if I can get a match.

Good luck to you both with your research

My Deakin is my 2nd great grandmother Sarah born 1861 daughter of Samuel Deakin b 1816 and Eliza Parton b 1819.  She had a brother also Samuel b 1852 not sure what happened to him and I'm also not sure if there were more siblings I'm still trying to track this family down.

Carolyn

Clayton is a name that is still in Dawley but not in my family tree, few and far between now I'm afraid!
I will ask around though someone else must be doing their tree or know someone who is.

I too have ancestors from Dawley- BROOME, MORRELL, POWELL

John BROOME and his wife Sarah Ann with 12 children .
John & Sarah were living at 33 Forge Row in 1841 where John was a Blacksmith
Their 3rd child was my gr grandfather Thomas BROOME  born in 1843 at Old Park
in 1851 they were at 53 Forge Row
I cannot find them in 1861 but in 1871 they were at Pool Hill Square and John was then a School Caretaker

I found a graveyard the other day that I hadn't seen before even though I had walked the dog past there several times. Its on Dawley Bank and I had a look round yesterday..theres not many graves but of the names just mentioned there are some there.
From what I can remember there is
Deakin
Clayton
Williams
Ball
Davies
Sankey
Bailey
Garbett

So if anyone wants some more info on them just ask and i'll pop in again when I walk past
