Birth/Baptism - St Stephens (St Albans) - William TOMS/TOMBS etc
« on: Sunday 10 February 08 11:29 GMT (UK) »

Please could someone help me find a birth/baptism for William Toms?  He married Hannah Hall 24.11.1821 at St Stephens but as he died before the 1841 census I have been unable to trace him.  The IGI gives his date as about 1797 but I couldn't see him on the St Stephens baptisms.   I have checked 1792 - 1812.  I am descended from their son William baptised 27.10.1822.

Sorry I can't help with your William's baptism but I think this may be his burial from the Herts B I.

William Toms 17 Jan 1841 aged 43 St Stephens. His age at death may help to narrow down the search for his baptism.

There are only 4 burials of Toms in St Stephens including your William, they are.

William Toms 13 April 1842 aged 72
Emma Toms 28 Feb 1849 aged 16
George Toms 27 Aug 1837 aged 2

I wonder if they could all be the same family. Undecided

I checked for Tombs as well but there are only 3 & none in St Stephens.

Hope this helps in some way.

Hello Maddie

Thanks for getting back to me.  Yes, I do think that is the right William which means I should be looking around 1797 for his baptism.
William buried in 1842 might have been his father but, unfortunately, three other people (from genes reunited with no actual proof!) have George as his father but until I can find his baptism I have no way of knowing if they are right.  I do not subscribe to that website but I am in touch with someone who does.
Emma was William's daughter bp. 5.6.1833.
George was the son of George & Catherine, bp 1.11.1835.  Incidentally, I haven't found George snrs baptism either - so could he have been William's brother?  He died in 1882 aged 73.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi

I think I have found the William who died in 1842 on the 1841 census, his wife is Mary & they have a son Richard with them. Ages are a little out but I found Mary again still with son Richard on the 1851 & she was born Aldenham. There children are on the IGI, Mary, Diana, James & Richard so it doesn't sound as if he is your Williams father going by the names.

I can't see any reason for the folks on Genes to have picked George as his father, as you say, there is no sign of him either. Undecided Is the George who died in 1882 the one born St Stephens c1806 ??

Seems strange there are no baptisms for them in St Stephens, I wonder if it could have been St Peters, then again I would have thought they would be on the IGI. Undecided

There is a burial for a John Toms 1800 in Elstree, wonder if that could be a lead.

Isn't it frustrating to be so near yet so far. Smiley

This probably hasn't helped at all but I'm trying Wink

Hello Maddie
Yes, that is the George 1806-1882.  He married Catherine Kiff at St Michaels, so perhaps William and George were baptised there and not St Stephens, although George does seem to have been born in St Stephens!  As you say, there's nothing on the IGI around that time for either William or George.
I think I'll try and arrange another visit to HALS to try and check other parish records.
Thanks again for your interest in my dilemma.

Hi again

Only sorry I couldn't have been more help. My Grt Grt Grt Grandfather was baptized in Aldenham & his parents dotted between Aldenham & St Stephens for all their kids baptisms, it can get very confusing. Wink

Hope you manage to find them eventually & they aren't among the "unbaptized" Smiley

Good luck

What a shame you had no luck in St Michaels either. Perhaps it would be worth a look in some of the other parishes in the area that are not on the IGI, although I know you could go on forever. Wink

My gg grandmother was born in Bushey but baptized in Great Stanmore.

Don't suppose he has anything to do with the Rickmansworth Tombs. Huh

Just a thought. Smiley

Good luck in your search any way.

Hello Maddie
No, I don't think he has anything to do with the Rickmansworth Toms, but not 100% sure.
His wife Hannah Hall was from St. Stephens, as were all their children and most of the grandchildren.  Perhaps I'll just come across him one day while I'm looking for somebody else!! Just a thought  Undecided
Thanks for your interest.  Smiley
