I've just found a possible reason for the long engagement.
I've found a Janet Leckie, bpt Gargunneck, 21 April 1704. Now in 1717 she would have been just 13 but by June 1718 she would have been 14 and, probably old enough to have children.
This Janet's parents were James and Elizabeth Leckie. Her first daughter was named Elizabeth. Robert and Janet had the following children Bpt. Kippen:
1719 - Elizabeth
1722- John
1726 - Walter
1728 - William
1730 - Robert
1732 - Anna
1737 - Andrew
Her father should be Walter but I can't find a baptism. There was a Walter Leckie having children at that time in Kippen - married to Katherine/Christian Ure but 
The only Robert McLuckie that I can find was bpt 5 Oct 1704, Kippen - parents, George McLuckie and Agnas Carrick. maybe Agnes=Ann but not sure.
I think this might be the end of the line unless there are MIs or wills

The sponsors for Elizabeth - bpt 1719 were Duncan Parlan and Walter Leckie.

Going back to my post #44 and Gadget's suggestion as to a reason for a long engagement, that makes sense.
However, I'm not convinced the 2 entrieds relate to the same couple. There is an entry beside each with a marriage date. Unless the 1st one was annulled when they realised how young the girl was?
Maybe the wills will show up more info but that will be a bit costly for Tracey. Is it a fiver each for the wills? Been a while since I applied for one.

Yes - I noticed that, Dave, and Janet Leckie definitely had Drummond written next to her.
I'll go check for children of the other two 
Wills - £5 a throw but they can be more interesting than some books!

Nothing in Kippen for Robert McL and Janet (alts) McL on SP or IGI
The IGI show quite a few McLuckie's having children around the same time - and similar names - brothers or cousins!

Sorry for my absence guys - been too nice a day for staying in - especially when there's graveyards to be visited!!
No McLuckie MI's for Kippen Churchyard.
There are Leckies and by the MI (triple grey granite tablets in east wall), it would appear they were a very 'well to do' family. Some of the individuals mentioned are:
William Leckie Esq., of Brioch died 1799 age 80
His wife, Janet Buchanan died 1804 age 74
There are umpteen children listed but the problem with the abbreviated MI's is that it's not clear just whose children they were.
This family appears to be related to the Ewings through an Isabella Leckie's marriage to Robert Ewing - Isabella died 1830 age 58
In the West Stirlingshire MI book, there are various references to Hearth Tax Returns of 1694 within Kippen Parish (which includes Buchlyvie). I don't have a clue what these are all about - it's just a list of names and whose lands they refer to but there's a couple of mentions of our favourite names . . . . . .
Laird of Bochlayvies Lands (Laird of Buchlyvie)
Walter Parland, John Yuill & James ....... (no surname listed).
James Watt, William Rotsone & William Parland 2.
John Key, James Millar & James Leckie
Leckie of Mye - there is of hearthes in his Ground without list
In the book's preface it says " (Hearth Tax). Usually the name of each householder is given with the number of his hearths (in the great majority of cases a single hearth) but in some cases it is only the total number of hearths within the Laird's ambit. The poor wer not liable to pay the tax, but in some cases their names are given"
There is reference to another Leckie: (Extracted from the Stirlingshire Ancient Monuments Books):
Old Parish Church, Kippen, old bell gifted by Walter Leckie of Dashers 1618, re-cast 1762 during ministry of Mr. Michael Potter.
I don't suppose any of the above is of any help, all it really does is prove there were Leckies in and around Kippen in the 1690's.

I did notice somewhere in my searches that the Leckies were quite 'posh' - Leckie of Leckie,etc. but wasn't sure if Janet was of that branch.
I'm not sure where we go from here - maybe wait for Tracey to come back to us 
We also had a lovely day so I cleaned my windows - not sure what Dave did

Hi Guys
Thank you sooooo much for all the work...you are great! You've managed more in one day than we have in months!
We now have a lot to go back and sift through, checking details etc. Be assured though that we will keep you posted on the Leckie angle  The hearth tax info is interesting as it does show Parlanes in the area in the late 17th C.

Thanks for the appreciation Tracey (and Rob).
Most of the info we got through Scotlands People site and IGI both available online.
MI's are a bit harder but there are usually folk like Anne that have records for any number of areas.
If you post on the appropriate board on RC you'll generally get a response.
You might want to have a look at ScotlandsPeople yourself - it can be expensive but it is a very good site.
I get the impression that people researching English records are a bit envious of the availability of Scottish records online.

Thought that I'd start on the James Parlan who married Elizabeth McLuckie in 1740. Not sure though
I've found 2 possibles in Kippen:
2 Feb 1701 - to Walter Parland and Margaret Harvie
3 August 1712 - to Duncan Parland and Jannet Parland
The first seems a bit early, but given what Tracey said about the Parlanes marrying late!
Elizabeth McLuckie was bpt 1719
The children's names don't fit at all though
