Hi
I am looking to track down the birth date and parents of John Parlane, born in Kippen. He married Jean Forsyth in 1801 and lived at Thirds Farm, Kippen and died before 1841. Can anyone help with this?

There are 2 or 3 births on SP in Stirlingshire, 1 in Kippen but that was back in 1755.
There are 2 in Strathblane, 1 in 1766, the other in 1772.
How you would evidence whether any of them were yours, I'm unsure.
Unlikely the OPR would give you much more info, although it might show the address of the father?

Hi Tracey
The only John Parlane that's showing on SP in Kippen (the Banns show him to be of Kippen) and old enough to marry in 1801 is:
Baptism - 13 Oct 1755 John Parlane - parents Alexander Parlane and Janet Robertson.
I think it might mean that their children's names, in birth order should be checked. I'll go see

These are the children that I've found. I've just given the year but can give the full baptism date if you want it:
1804 - James
1806 - Mary
1808 - John
1811 - Robert
1813 - Walter
1816 - Elizabeth
1818 - William
1820 - Robert
It would seem to suggest that John's parents were a James and Elizabeth 
Have we got Jean's parents? Looks like she was from Gargunnock on the marriage entry

Likely parents for Jean:
Gargunnock 1 Aug 1779 Jean d/o John Forsyth and Mary Birrell
John and Mary would be the ones i'd expect so we're probably looking for a James and Elizabeth unless Jean had their first child bpt Gargunnock

Just found Jean's death cert on SP and it shows father as John Forsyth and mother as Mary Burnet so the Gargunnock entry is the right one.
The 1758 John might work as the Parlane males seem to marry quite late in life to younger women eg John's son William b. 1816. His children were born from 1865 to 1869 and his wife was born in 1828.

I don't think this is the correct John, UNLESS, he remarried.
There is a marriage for a John Parlan to a Jean Strang in Kippen on 11/10/1791 which is likely to be the John born 1758.
Sister Christian married Andrew Lockhart in Kippen on 7/3/1777.

More checks then Dave - to see what happened to Jean Strang.
Children of James Parl*n* and Elizabeth McLucky/ie baptised Kippen 1740-1780
1743 Margaret Parlan - mother's name recorded as Janet McLuckie
1747 - Elizabath Parland
1749 Anne Parlan
1758 - John Parlan
1758 Christian Parlan (same date as John)
There was also a Walter Parlan having children around the same time - maybe a brother of James - certainly one of John's later sons was named Walter.

James and Elizabeth look right as just spoken to a relative who said that Harvies, witnesses to the twins' register entry, farmed for years at the Heights farm which is the neighbouring property to Thirds Farm.
It maybe that John remarried....curiouser and curiouser

I cannot find any children Parlan / Parlane / Parland with a mother Strang.
I thought if we could find children to that marriage it might tell us something.
It's stretching things a bit but perhaps Jean Strang died young, perhaps even in childbirth and John did indeed remarry?
I can't think where to take this now Gadget. Any ideas?

Was just going to say the same thing.
No Jean/Jane/Janet/Jessie Strang as mother to any Parl*n* children in Stirlingshire 1790-1820 Only ones are John and Jean Forsyth.
She could have died. They could have moved away. The John who married her could have been the 1755 one
I'll do a wider search.
