Early Census lookups please: George & Sophia WARBY St. Albans
« on: Monday 11 February 08 00:16 GMT (UK) »

Good evening,

I would be very grateful if anyone could supply the early Census details for George WARBY (b. c1789 perhaps in ST. Albans but possibly in Tewin) and Sophia (née BONNICK) B; St. Albans 1792.

They were married in 1816 in St. Peter's St. Albans, and had at least 3 children:

- Elizabeth b. 1817, David b. 1819 and Susannah b. 1833. It's possible there may have been others between 1819 and 1833 but I haven't found them yet.

I would imagine that it should be possible to find them in at least the 1841 Census and the 1851 Census. After that it's a question mark !

Many thanks for any help.

Good afternoon,

Great stuff ! Thank you very much both of you. You have managed to fill in a hole in my files very neatly. Given the early death of Sophia in 1842 he must have been a lodger with several different households afterwards.

Much appreciated.

I spent ages staring at a brick wall in researching a Warby in the Hitchin area, only to eventually find that a lot of their records had been spelled Walby or Waby, which the IGI and other websites didn't recognise as a variant of Warby (my lot eventually settled on 'Worbey').

Richard.

Richard

I tried the 1841 census search under Worboy as well as Warby and variants just in case but nothing came up at all Sad

Perhaps they just didn't answer the door!

Hi Nick,

Just to enlarge on the info given by Kerry, the Herts Burial Index records the burial of Sophia WARBY age 51 on 13 May 1842 at St.Peters, St.Albans.

Peter,

Many thanks for your time and trouble in finding the 1841 Census details and the exact date of Sohia's burial.

One question: where you have indicated 'Y' after the individual names, does that mean that they were supposed to be born in the
county ? I ask because up to now I - and others - haven't found any trace of George WARBY being born in St. Albans itself.

I have found 2 possibilities: either 1789 in Tewin (parents James & Anne) or 1788 in Bennington (parents George & Sarah).
Both of these would comply with "being born in the county" presumably.

One again, many thanks for your input and assistance on this one !

For your reference Nick

I've just tried the reference Peter supplied for the 1841 on Ancestry and it must be a missing page as nothing comes up at all and on FMP transcribed as Walby  Roll Eyes

I'm glad he was able to find it for you.

Usually the Y is used to indicate that each person was born in county and am sure that is what Peter meant.

Good morning Kerry,

Thanks for your message, and for confirming that the 'Y' was what I thought it meant !

You and Peter have been of great help. Thanks.

Hi Kerry,

Ancestry omitted quite a few parishes in their edition of the 1841 and details are given by Rick in the 'Missing Parishes' entry at the top of this board.    My CD would appear to be complete but not indexed.
