Mancetter Almshouses
« on: Monday 11 February 08 08:12 GMT (UK) »

I have references to two ancesters living in the almshouses at Mancetter, one in 1881 and one in 1901. According to the census information these almshouses are referenced as A, B, C, etc.

There are two blocks of almshouses, one built in the 18th century adjacent to the church, and the second 19th century buildings opposite the church. The properties are now numbered 1, 2, 3, etc. with number 1 commencing at the new almshouses.

Of my ancestors, one was in almshouse 'A' and on in 'H'. Can anyone explain how the old reference letters relate to the new numbers? It would be nice to identify which actual property each lived in.

Thanks.

Can't help with the letters but there are two sets of Almshouses in Mancetter, one in the Churchyard and one across the road opposite. They can be viewed at - http://www.search.windowsonwarwickshire.org.uk/engine/theme/default.asp?theme=1177

It is a beautiful setting with Church, Manor House, Almshouses and of course the pub all in close proximity
