Information on Coopers store in Scotland
« on: Monday 11 February 08 17:57 UTC (UK) »

Hi
Can any one tell me if there was a shop by the name of Coopers, that sold fresh coffee beans and other groceries.    They also had a shop in Liverpool, and you could smell the coffee all the way up the street.
my husbands grandfather Albert Ernist Kelly, worked in the Liverpool shop and two of his sisters did,   they some time had to travel to Scotland to work at the other shop  and see family. This would be abt 1911
Sir Bertram Grimes was the manager of the store in Liverpool and part of the family that owned it  we think.   We have been told  of a connection with family, store, and Beattock . If any one can help I would be very greatfull. Albert grandfather was a John Rae and we believe he was from Dumfries.
I know its a long shot  but  I had to try

I collect Scottish stoneware etc.  From time to time I come across stoneware jars marked Coopers, Glasgow and Liverpool, which were used to serve butter etc.

Hi,
There was a Coopers store in Thornhill, Dumfriesshire.   It eventually became a Spar probably in the 1980's. and is still there.   I can remember it as Coopers when I was small in the 60's and 70's.   I don't know if it was the same group as the ones in Glasgow and Liverpool but I think there were a few of them.

I can remember buying a haggis for a friend from Coopers Glasgow about 1955/6 but being from Liverpool I knew that store very well. It was the class grocers then and a  nice restaurant upstairs. My mother worked close by at Escott,s Hats during the war and got our groceries delivered each Saturday. We had to put a list in at the office upstairs by Tuesday each week. The list always started off with 'butter, marg, lard, bacon, cheese, eggs, sugar tea' which were all on the ration of course.

The delivery came round on Saturday on the Coopers van and in a hamper which had to be emptied in the kitchen and returned to the driver poste haste. One week our driver said he would not be doing it any more as he had won £15,000 on the pools or sweepstake. Never saw him again!

We were still getting deliveries up to about 1956 from a little branch ( one of many) on Tuebrook opposite the Carlton cinema. Alan Williams
