That does seem to be the most logical explanation for the disappearance of Miss Harris and the appearance of Miss Garfoot.
Threw me when her married name is Garfoot. Then again, this is Lincolnshire so it's nothing unusual! (Lincolnshire born and bred and still live here so I can get away with saying that)
I really need to get my hands on that birth certificate and hope that the natural father is listed otherwise that particular branch stops here

I came to the same conclusion mum44, Jane Ann Harris born to Martha, she later marries Robert Garfoot and takes his surname on censuses, happens all the time doesnt it.... I wonder if a christening record would name Robert as father or someone different......or no father
The IGI baptism record doesn't show a father - it is an extracted record

Hi Wayne
Checked Skillington parish records in Grantham library today and found the following info.
No 775 Dec 11th 1864 Jane Ann Harris Parent Martha Single woman.
Also found other Harris baptisms between 1862/65 if you want info.

I have a nasty feeling that you will be proved right about the lack of a father on the birth certificate. If the father had been known (or alive?) when the child was born then I'm sure a double barreled wedding would have occurred at the very least
Many thanks for all the help on this thread, very much appreciated.
Thanks for the offer of other baptisms Kathy but I'm only looking for my direct line, not it's branches, so Martha and her parents are all I'm really after.

Looks like Joseph Harris m. Mary Selby abt sep 1839, Grantham district, per FreeBMD could be yours.
I can't see them in 1841 in Lincs or Rutland though.

Now bear in mind I'm new to this site so... if I offend or don' t do it right bear with me. I have found the site because I'm planning a trip to Skillington tthis weekend to research the Harris family. I am a direct decendent of Joseph and Mary Harris and of course very excited about the chatter concerning Jane Ann Harris. Whilst she is of interest I'm primarily interested in the male line although I do get distracted very easily! I think you said you had visited Gratham library for research. Do you have to book and are they open on a Saturday? I have failed to assertain the name of the vicar/priest at the church in Skillington so I am hoping to find out on my visit. I know the churchyard has many Harris graves and incidentally the Rayson faimily are well represented. (My g grandfather married a Jane Rayson as the second of his three wives) Many thanks

Hi Headfrog, Welcome to RootsChat. I see that Wayne Auto has not been on line for a couple of weeks. You could have an interesting connection. Can't answer your question on Grantham library but I am sure that somebody will help you out. Good luck with your searches.
Geoff

Hi Headfrog
Grantham library is open on a Saturday 9.00am-4.00pm.and it is advisable to book in advance as they only have 1 Microfilm/printer machine and 1 microfiche reader no printer.(the other one is out of use.)If you ring 01476 591411 you will be put through to Lincoln switchboard and then ask for Grantham library to book machine they will put you through.(new system you cannot book Grantham library direct).Skillington is on Microfilm. I sent a message to Wayne offering names I found in Skillington baptisms but he did not want them but if you would I can give you those I found.
Cheers
Kathy.

Blimey! That makes me sound really ungrateful lol
Hi Headfrog
I've had some fairly major 'puter problems so I've not been on for a while. Even so I normally get an email when a thread I started has a new post so I can check in but until today I haven't had one so missed the last handful of posts.
I'd be more than happy to share my tree with you, but bear in mind that I am currrently only researching my direct line so Jane Ann is the only Harris that I have as she married in. Her parents (well mother, as established in this thread ) and grandparents I only have the names for from this thread and have not yet researched.
If you use Genes reunited my full tree so far is on there and I'll grant you access, if not then PM me your email address and I'll send you a Gedcom if you are interested.
Wayne

Thanks Wayne I'm off to Skillington tomorrow and I've also booked a session at Grantham library so I hope I can advance my search further. The more I do the more I'm getting confused with the different branches of the Harris family and so looking at Parish Registers might help sort some things out. Thank you for your help and the offer of access to your work. If I may I'll hold back on that until I can sort out in my ownmind the different family groupings in my work. If I come across anything regarding Jane Ann that I think my be of use I'll let you have it. Many thanks
David
