Byker is to the east and just beyond the old boundary of Newcastle. Byker Bar was one of the farms in the township and divided up into building plots in 1879 to house the workers in the expanding coal mines, factories and shipyards.

The area of Byker was absorbed into the city of Newcastle in 1835.

Byker lay within the Newcastle "ancient" parish of All Saints.

The parish was made up of three "townships" ( a township in 1800 was terminology for a sub-division of a parish, not necessarily pertaining to a town) All Saints itself, Heaton and Byker.

thanks for that his occupation was ropemaker at the time of his marriage when he gave byker bar as residence,so he wouldnt have been working as a farm worker,so im wondering if he was living with family members on his grandmothers side who were farmers.something i will go look at now,and check he hasnt been put down as a different surname.i know in the 1851 census his brother and sister were staying with their grandmother elizabeth hackworth and both children were down as hackworth as well.

Hi Pat,
You could also look at

This Northern Region Newsplan lists all the surviving holdings and microfilm of all newspapers currently or previously published in the region
