Chamberg from Germany
« on: Thursday 14 February 08 10:23 GMT (UK) »

Hello,
Once again I am looking for help on this board.
I have the marriage cert for a Gertrude Chamberg ,she married Jacob Henrici in Middlebrough England   I have her on one census which give her place of birth as Germany. Her father was Theodore Chamberg a tile maker no record of him in England.
Suggestions please.

I see that her husband was also b. Germany (possibly Wiesbaden, re: 1881 census's 'Wisbaden'?) If you track him down (eg. naturalization records - if he ended up in Northallerton there's a possiblity listed on the NA) you might find that she came from the same area. It seems unlikely that she went to Middlebrough by herself - she perhaps either knew Jacob in Germany, and followed him to England, or other family/friends of hers also moved to the area and she came with them.

Who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate?

Yes Jacob was born in Germany I have his naturalization papers plus his family in Anspach going back to the late 1600`s.
All I have on Gertrude is her marriage and fathers name she died around about 1875 in Newcastle.
The witnesses to their marriage were-Philip Henritzi(Henrici) and William Sterzel.

Hmm - and there's no trace of her in the same area?

(Could name also be 'Schamberg'?)

Wish I knew on cert its spelled Chamberg but that could be how it was pronounced she made her mark so assume she couldn't read or write which is odd again as Jacob was well educated i understand. There again he ended up marrying the cook from the hotel he owned.

Maybe the name is "Schaumburg" and the person writing the cert. understood "Chamberg"??

Hi Susan P,

if you go to Wikipedia. org  and put in "Schaumburg", you will see that there is also an area in Lower Saxony named Schaumburg.  Maybe this would help you further - at least to understand where the name comes from.

No problem -

I live in Germany, so hear these names and areas often.  Glad to help where and when I can.

Hi Susan,

have you tried Schamberg? There are still Schambergs living in Anspach/Neu-Anspach.
