Ruscombe baptisms
« on: Thursday 14 February 08 17:02 GMT (UK) »

I think I'm closing in on my missing Deborah Devon/Deven.

She married in Hurst,Berks in 1676 but there's no sign of her baptism in Hurst.

I've just had a marriage name search done by Berks FHS and they've come up with 3 Devon/Deven marriages in Ruscombe, which is very near Hurst. The 3 marriages look as if they cover 3 generations, but the couple who look like my Deborah's parents are:

William Deven = Margaret Sowthay 15 May 1654.

Could anyone kindly look up the Ruscombe parish records to see if there are any Devon/Deven children baptised to William & Margaret?

Hi dilly,

Thanks for that. Looks like Ann and William jnr could be my Deborah's siblings - William snr and Margaret could be her parents. I think Hurst is so near to Ruscombe that they could be baptised in the one place but buried in the other.

Need to find some altruistic person to do some Ruscombe look ups for me!!  Kiss

Hi jill,

I live just by Ruscombe church (walking distance) so know the area pretty well. Both are "sprawling" parishes, so I would think it likely the churches had wide areas. Hurst is definately larger and now has a shop, PO, butcher, couple of pubs, church, school, village hall etc but still feels quite "spread out". Ruscombe just has the church and hosues but not much else in terms of a village centre, but it didn't really need it as Twyford was/is so close (walking distance).

There's a lot about the local area at this web site here, which is a web version of a book that was published a few years back:
http://history.hvs.org.uk/

You probably have this but the parish records (for Hurst) are also transcribed here:
http://history.hvs.org.uk/Hurst/Parish-Reg-index.htm

I'd love to do your lookup at the BRO but it probably wouldn't be for a week or so as I'd need to do it one Thursday - they don't open at weekends which is a bit annoying, but if no-one else is "going anyway", I'll see what I can do to help  Wink

Dilly,

Thanks for the link to the site about the Ruscombe/Hurst area. I'm going to have a look at it right now - I have a few ancestors from this area so will find it very interesting.

Thanks for the offer to look for my Devons in the Ruscombe PRs - it's really generous of you. I've been looking for Deborah now for about 3 years, so I'm sure I can wait a few more weeks! In the meantime, I shall keep my fingers firmly crossed!

Thanks again,
Jill
