Hi jill,
I live just by Ruscombe church (walking distance) so know the area pretty well. Both are "sprawling" parishes, so I would think it likely the churches had wide areas. Hurst is definately larger and now has a shop, PO, butcher, couple of pubs, church, school, village hall etc but still feels quite "spread out". Ruscombe just has the church and hosues but not much else in terms of a village centre, but it didn't really need it as Twyford was/is so close (walking distance).
There's a lot about the local area at this web site here, which is a web version of a book that was published a few years back: http://history.hvs.org.uk/
You probably have this but the parish records (for Hurst) are also transcribed here: http://history.hvs.org.uk/Hurst/Parish-Reg-index.htm
I'd love to do your lookup at the BRO but it probably wouldn't be for a week or so as I'd need to do it one Thursday - they don't open at weekends which is a bit annoying, but if no-one else is "going anyway", I'll see what I can do to help
