1841 census appreciated
« on: Friday 15 February 08 16:30 GMT (UK) »

Hi: I am looking for a George Morecroft and also a Augustus Morecroft hopefully in Portsmouth. The spelling may be incorrect as I am looking at an old will. Augustus was a tailor.

Hi,

Sorry, I couldn't find anything like an Augustus Morecroft (any spelling) at all anywhere, and there are a few Georges but not in Portsmouth area ~ have you any idea of age, or where born, or anything else about them?

thanks for trying. I have no idea regarding the age but Agustus may have died before 1841, The two names crop up in a will which was in 1834. Augustus was an executor and brother -in -law of James Macnamara. I think that George may have been his son. Were any of the George born in Hampshire?

If Augustus was an executor, I would have expected the will to indicate where he lived.  I can't find a reference to an Augustus Morecroft (and variants) - no marriage, no entry in a directory, no burial.   Huh

The will was in 1834. It mentions Augustus  and it looks like Morcorft from Porsmouth. There is a middle name but cannot read it and it also mentions that Augustus was a tailor. It could be that he died before1837.

If he did, he does not seem to have been buried under that name - I looked.  Sad

I want to thank you for your help. I hope to be looking at a marriage film soon and see if I can find his sister's marriage. If I don't haveany luck maybe I can attached the piece of the will with the man's name on it. He has a middle name but I cannot make it out

Well, would you believe it.  Grin

Augustus Urmstron Meredith married Jane Macnamara 1 May 1823 in Alverstoke.

Elsewhere, his middle name is trancribed or written "Armstrong"

This may help with your missing link to the Macnamara name.

This actually may be more complicated.  Undecided

Augustus Meredith the tailor is in London in 1841

HO107/726/8 10 p 15 1 Crown Court  parish of St Bride

Augustus Meredith 45 Taylor (sic) not born in county
Tildia Meredith age 20 not born in county

There is an Augustus Meredith aged 35 in Southampton St Mary in Hampshire, married to Sarah (they married in 1830 in Sussex) who is a bricklayer aged 35 (HO107/417/2 9 p12)

Thanks  I had found both  Umbruston and Armstrong names .
Also when I had looked at the fische his wife's name was Ane and not Jane. Now you know why I am pulling out my hair (LOL) I know there was a son George mentioned in a will . Did you find him in the 41 census. I think he was born abt 1828. I found him in the 81 census but do not have the other censuses.

No I didn't find George in 1841.

But he was baptised 9 April 1828 at St Thomas Portsmouth, parents Augustus Armstrong and Jane Eliza Meredith.  Huh

There is a registered copy of Augustus Urmstone Meredith's will at Hampshire Record Office -recorded as gentleman of Southsea, dated 1876.
