Hi

Can anyone help me find my missing milnes in 1841 and 1851?
I know they are there but i can't find them, i have them in 1861 onwards.

Robert Milne was born around 1815 in cortachy and clova, forfarshire, he was a ploughman or farm servant, and elizabeth was born around 1817 kingoldrum, forfarshire.
They had children includingbarbara born 1856, george born 1847 and jane born 1849.  They also had an isabella.

I'd be really chuffed if someone could find them for me!

Hello poppysmum

Not much forward after an hour.

The IGI has Elizabeth Webster marrying Robert Miln (note - no 'e') on 22 Aug 1840 in Kingoldrum, Angus, Scotland.

With the dates you gave Robert Milne and Elizabeth have the following children - according to the IGI:

George Milne - b.  28 Sep 1847  ch.  12 Oct 1847, Menmuir, Angus
Jane Milne   b.01 Apr 1849  ch.  14 Apr 1849 Menmuir, Angus.
Barbara Milne b.  15 jan 1856 Menmuir Angus.

Can't find Isabella born to this couple on the IGI

Went to www.freecen.org.uk  looking for the 1841 census - only for Angus.  Can't find them together as a couple.
Searched for a married Elizabeth and married Robert Milne born from 1815 +/- 5 yrs and 1820 +/- 5yrs  - in Angus and only came up with 2 people.  Both registered at different addresses as aged 20.

A polite reminder from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  “Enumerators were instructed to round down the ages of persons 15 years and over to the nearest five years. Hence a given age of 28 would be recorded as 25, one of 63 as 60 and so on. If a person lied about their age, this, combined with the rounding down, could severely distort the actual age. You will find instances where enumerators did not adhere to this instruction on age and inserted the given age”.

Robert at an address called ‘Dillavaird’ in Airlie, Angus.  Down as an Ag lab - working for a farmer called Francis Lamond.

Elizabeth at an address called ‘Dunninald’  in Maryton Angus - living with a family called Watt - husband William who is a salmon fisher  - wife Helen.

I may be widely off the mark - but it’s the best I can do - perhaps others can offer alternatives?  I don’t have free access to the ’51 census.  Good luck with your search.   Regards,    Steve   :O)

Hello Monica and Caroline,

Good spot Monica, but to further muddy the waters...  :O) possibly two families children? or ?

From the IGI :

1.  Isabella Milne b.  13 Apr 1842, Airlie Angus and

2.  David Milne b.  28 Aug 1844, Airlie Angus - both to a Robert Milne and Ann Webster...

Curiouser and curiouser   :O) or maybe -I'm off on a tangent?

(Looked at all the Anne Websters on the IGI between 1835 and 1845 marriages - non to a Robert Milne and the only one in Airlie was in 1840 to a James Soot or Suit).

I see what you mean Steve.  Can't see any sign of a family with Robert & Ann and those children in 1851 in Angus  Undecided  Only that entry that I posted with mother Elizabeth, which would seem to fit with the info Caroline gave.
