DORSETT or POULTON, Risborough
« on: Friday 15 February 08 22:31 GMT (UK) »

Caroline POULTON or DORSETT (b1847) of Monks Risborough seems to have had 2/3 children. On censuses, she and the children appear to live with her parents but no sign of a husband.

Can someone please look up the children's baptisms for me - if they exist - and let me know whether there is a father's name attached to any of them? Baptisms in Princes or Monks Risborough, I suppose.

The children are -

John DORSETT (POULTON?) b 1863
Ernest  "            "                 b 1866

There is also a Harry b1863 listed in the 1881 census who may or may not be the same person as John, above.

It is possible that these children are not Caroline's (a relative's) but her surname varies between Poulton and Dorsett so likely that they are hers.

Thank you for your help.

Hi

Have you checked the IGI for possible christenings?
www.familysearch.org

Have you checked the BMD index to establish what surname the births were registered under?  A copy of one of the birth certs will show whether there was a father

The 1871 clearly shows her as Dorsett and married so have you checked for a Poulton/Dorsett marriage?  It's possible her husband was a mariner

Quote
Caroline POULTON or DORSETT (b1847)

The 1871 shows her b 1843 - not 1847

Have a look at this freebmd entry for the December qtr 1862

Abel Dersett/Abel Dorsell
Caroline Pou**
Caroline Poulter
Wycombe Volume 3A Page 636

There is March qtr 1863 death for an Abel Dorsett - no age shown but suspect it may have been their first child

There is a submitted IGI entry for Abel but they have the wrong mother.  His mother is shown as Sarah.  I have checked back to the 1841 and James was married to Rachel at that time and Abel was only born 1842 (despite him being 10 on the 1851)

Abel Dorsett Sept qtr 1842  Wycombe   Volume: 6  Page: 391

The 1841 entry has had a mis-transcription notified by an Ancestry subscriber which may suggest they have an interest in the family.  I have sent them an email

Hello Carole

Thank you for all this work. I am grateful for - and surprised by - the conclusions you have reached, which I believe are correct, and which should have occurred to me long ago.

Abel was the brother of my G-gfathr William. I had not found the dorsett-poulton marriage and would not have thought it could possibly be for Abel as I have always assumed that it is his death that is registered 1863, not that of a child. However, perhaps I have simply jumped to the wrong conclusions. perhaps Abel senior was, as suggested, a soldier or sailor, always absent at census times. I have not found evidence of an older Abel but, believing him to be dead, I have not looked too hard.

I have seen the IGI entry on this DORSETT/DOSSETT family but there are so many errors that I have completely disregarded it. I am very grateful indeed for the marriage info you have given me which I had been unable to locate. I will look a lot harder at Abel snr and see what I can turn up.

Thanks very much for your help
