Mary Houlston look up 1841 and 1851 census

Mary was born about 1833 she is listed as Mary Parton aged 48 married to John Parton and was living at 1 Herberts Court Chester in 1881.
Mary is my Great Grandmother.

According to the 1881 cencus Marys husband is Thomas not John

..will look for her now..

Hi Jane,

Many thanks, your right about his name being Thomas, for some reason I thought it was john. My Grandmother Elizabeth Parton was born in 1869, I am trying to go back and see were Mary was born. I see it said Dudley on the census, was there no Mary Houlston in Chester I know nothing about her, other than she appeared on 1881 census.

Sorry Jane, I misled you, I meant to say that she appeared as Mary Parton on the Chester 1881 Census. I obtained her maiden name from my Grandmothers birth certificate 13 July 1869.

Im as sure as I can be that the family ive traced back for you are correct....Your topic heading is a look up for the 41/51 cencus which suggests you have Mary in 1861..if so can you post the Ref No.....Im inclined to think that what is throwing this is that she gives her place of birth as Chester in the 1871 so the 61 details would be handy.

Hi Jane,

I don't have the 61 census only the 71/81, the reason that I chose the the 41 and 51 was that I thought I would have a better chance of finding her and where her family came from.
I have found a Mary Houlston and a Thomas Parling, who were married in Chester between 1866 and 1870, that could be them but I don't know. The ages seem to contradict each other on the later census's.

There is a civil marriage of Mary Houlston and Thomas Parton
at Chester in 1868 on the Cheshire BMD site.

As Elizabeth was born in Chester in 1869 I should think this is pretty conclusive that it is your Mary and Thomas.

You can print the application form off from the site and it gives you the address to send for the certificate.

This will at least give you both Mary and Thomas's father's Christian names, and their occupations which would be a good place to begin looking for them on the earlier census. This will also lead you to finding the marriages of both Mary and Thomas's parents

As you know on the 1881 it gives Thomas place of birth as Ashley, Staffs, and Mary's Dudley Worcs.

The information Jane has given you regarding Mary in Dudley is more than likely correct.

I looked at the Chester BDM but found only Parting and Houlston 1868 to 70 have you seen somewhere else where the name Parton is spelt properly???

I beg your pardon George it is 'Parling'.

I'm laughing as you have put 'Parting' on your last reply..sorry about that. Blame it on the varifocals.

However, I do think it it would be a good idea to phone the Register office and ask them to check the name on the register as somebody transcribing it onto the Cheshire BMD site might have mistranscribed it.

I have looked on Ancestry BMD and can't find this particular marriage which is odd Huh

If I am right, the name on the 1871 is also mistranscribed.

I can't find Mary or Thomas on the 1861 so far, they are certainly difficult to find..or it might just be me Cheesy

I did find a death for a John Houlston in 1840 Dudley 18 200 and wondered if this was your Mary's Father, as I notice that her brother is also a John.

Just speculating at this point.

Hi Su,

You haven't got my hopes up, I think the same as you, that it has been transcribed wrongly. My distant cousin from Australia has had the same thing and they have now corrected it on the web site. A few mistake can happen when they are doing a lot and we should be grateful for the work they have done if all the Registry offices had the information on line wouldn't it be wonderful. Thanks also for the other information about Mary's father,

It would also seem that Thomas changed his birthplace and his name as on the 1891 he is John and was born in Newcastle under Lyme Huh

.....and in 1901(indexed as Partin) he is back to being Thomas and born in Newcastle-Staffordshire
