My brother-in-law's Irish greatgrandfather and ggrandmother, Patrick and Catherine Walsh died in a "whirlpool in Ireland" but i'm wondering if that family clue refers in fact to the Carryvreckan whirlpool which i think is near or in Argyllshire. Is that correct?
Which newspapers of the latter half of the 19th century would have covered any drownings there?
Their daughter Mary was born in Kilkee, Co Clare in 1859 so it would have been after that, and i think before 1880 when she emigrated to Australia.
Saw your other earlier posting but am wondering why you now think their deaths might have happened in Scotland. If they died in Scotland their deaths should have been registered there (see Scotland's People website).
Hi Julie, this is the whirlpool you referred to; not to be taken lightly, but passable at exactly the right moment in clear weather. Been there, done.....
where the author states that he has found no recorded drownings. George Orwell had a very near miss when writing his novel "1984" and stayed for some time in a cottage on the east side of Jura.
I thought after a bit that maybe although being Irish, they were on the move, and one website spoke of the whirlpool being between Ireland and Scotland, so i thought it was worth a shot!
Julie- I posted a link on your other thread about Kilkee. Still think local paper would have mentioned the event and find the date of death is the first step.
