Death of George Rogerson Todd - 1876
« on: Saturday 16 February 08 12:58 GMT (UK) »

I am hoping to find information on the death of a George Rogerson Todd (Rogerson being his middle name), who apparently died in Cramlington pit in 1876 aged 12.

George was born at Dudley, Northumberland in 1864, and appears on the 1871 census living in Cramlington village aged 6, with his family all being miners.

He is not on the 1881 census, and I have searched not only free bmd but also St. Catherine's Indexes for the years 1871-1881 but there is no record of his death.

However, according to the Durham Mining Museum website, there is a George Todd who died in Cramlington Colliery aged 13, on 6th March 1876.

As there are no other George Todd's dying in Northumberland between 1871-1881 of a similar age, I have deduced that it must be him.

I travelled to Newcastle Library to look at newspapers detailing an inquest, but it is closed until 2009.

Can anybody please tell me (firstly) why his death would not be listed in St. Catherine's Index?

Also, what is the best step to take next to find any information?

Regards,

Darin.

Hi Darin

It does seem strange that the death is missing from the GRO register (I looked as well but only for the first 2 quarters of 1876)
There are many known errors in the GRO index - have you tried the local district to see if they have a record of his death - you may need to call a couple of places - I looked on Genuki and found
Cramlington was in the district Tynemouth 1837-1935 however, from here
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/REG/districts/tynemouth.html
Registers now divided between North Tyneside, Northumberland Central and Newcastle upon Tyne districts.
The addresses/phone for each of these districts are available if you follow the links on the above page.

Darin,

You say that Newcastle Library "is closed until 2009"

So how do you think that is affecting the readers and researchers of
Newcastle ?

The BUILDING that housed the main branch of the Newcastle City Library was closed/demolised about a year ago. A new building to house the library is being built on the same site.

In the time between closure and re-opening,  the Local and Family Studies section has been doing "business as usual" in the basement of the Civic Centre.

Darin,

This is a wild stab at your query.....

(The first George Todd.. birth reg Sept Qtr 1859, death of George Rogerson Todd reg Sept Qtr 1861... both in Tynemouth Reg District )

Second George R Todd .. birth reg Sept Qtr 1864

The Durham Mining Museum web site has him dying on 6 Mar 1876 aged 13
( was about 11 and a half ! )

No sign of his death registration at Tynemouth Reg District.

But in the Mar Qtr of 1876 there is a death registration, aged 13, of a George Toward  at Tynemouth Reg Dist   Huh.

Unfortunately there were a couple of George Towards in Northumberland on Census 1861... so maybe it is not the misspelling I originally  thought it was !
