« on: Saturday 16 February 08 16:03 UTC (UK) »

Hi my name is Catherine.

I have a lot of family that originate from Llanddewi Velfrey. If anyone has got any information on anyone from there, especially with the surnames Stephens, Phillips, Picton or Griffiths. Or if anyone has information on "Fagurfach" please let me know coz it could be a lot of help.

Thanks

My Stephens family of Llandewi Velfrey lived at Parc-y-lan public house and many of the men were blacksmiths. Is this perhaps one of the families you seek?

Phoebe Stephens (born 1849) [my first cousin three times removed)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         married Benjamin Phillips and had 15 children.

According to "The Place-Names of Pembrokeshire" by B.G Charles Fagwr Fach is "lost" but is described as being "South of Llandewi Velfrey on the parish boundary".

I am related to William and Francis Stephens of the Parc y Lan Inn, Llandewi Velfrey.  They were my Great, Great Grandparents, their daughter Pheobe was my Great Grandmother.   I am trying to trace what happened to Williams father James.

William's father James died 4 October 1863 and was buried at Henllan Independent Chapel's burial ground.

James's first wife, by whom he had 4 children that I know about, was Phoebe Bowen. They married  31 July 1813 at the Chapelry of Eglwys-fair-Glyntaf (Whitland).

James's father was David Stephen.

Phoebe had 10 siblings, six of whom married and had descendants.

One of Phoebe's younger sisters, Margaret, was my great grandmother.

Phoebe and Dan Eynon had eight children.

If you post your query on the Rootsweb Dyfed list I can give you a great many  names.

Thank you, I had been told via Alf Thomas (Catherine Stephen's second son) that James was buried in an unmarked grave in Wiston where he was born.  My Grandmother was Pheobe Elizabeth Eynon born in Ffynnon.
I had been told that David was the father of James but know nothing else.  Would be pleased to hear anything else about them.  Thank you.

I met Alfred and Theodosia in July 1977 on one of my research visits to Llandewi Velfrey. It was Alfred who told me that James was buried at Henllan Independent Chapel.

I can probably add nothing to what you already know about James, but I do have a file giving a great number of James's descendants if you wish to receive it.

You presumably are aware that Catherine's first born, William Bowen Stephens (half-brother to Alfred and Theodosia) who was killed in the first world war, appeared on a Royal Mail special stamp sheet commemorating Armistice Day 2007?

I have a copy of the stamps, yes I know quite a lot about them as Catherine was my Grandmother's aunt.  Although I know very little about James and especially Pheobe.  I don't know when she died, and must admit I never saw any grave for Stephens in Henllan.  Any idea where in Wiston they lived?  I would be interested to see James descendant's.  Thank you

hello Omega

I too have the Dyfed FHS fiche for St David's Church. Also Trevangor and Ffynnon in Llandewi, and Rhydwilym and Blaenconin in Llandissilio if you need any look-ups.

William Stephen's wife's maiden name was Griffiths and her father's name was Thomas. He was a cooper, presumably from Llandewi.  Any connection to your family? His wife 's name MAY have been Margaret.

I have transcribed the registers for Llandewi and checked the entries against   the BTs, but cannot find a David Griffith baptized 1738.

I have a copy of his Ordination Papers.

Nearly forgot my manners,thank-you for offer of help.

I have Mariages for Cemais Hundred & Dungleddy.if i can help.

I have discovered when i go on holiday to Pembrokeshire (about 4 times a year) i spend a lot of time going round Grave Yards,a lot are`nt buried where you think!!!!!!!!!

Hello Omega

Do you think there might be a connection between your Griffith and Frances Griffith?

Only two John Griffith married in Llandewi in the years before 1830:

9 Oct 1703 m Anne Thomas
1 Nov 1708 m Catherine William

unless patronymics were still being used, in which case I've got to look for a Griffith + [some other name]
