What do you want to know about her Steve - parents and siblings - or do you have them ?

Steve - I think that probably the best way to take this back would be to get the marriage certificate and find her father's name.

If the only evidence you have for her being born in Brighton is the 1901 - maybe she was born in the Brighton area - or somewhere in Sussex ?

The only Mary Jane REED born 1877 in Sussex according to FreeBMD was registered Uckfield Jun qtr. No READ, REID or RIED. The only Mary Janes in Brighton were 1882 and 1883.

1881 has her with her parents John and Eliza at Horsmonden in Kent. She was born Framfield, all her older siblings at Brenchley. Father John also born Brenchley was an ag lab.

Perhaps Mum44 could have a look for these ones in 1891.

Well, sadly I can't spot any of them in 1891!  I've tried Reed, Reid and Read, I've tried surname only and there doesn't seem to be a John b. 1839 brenchley or an Eliza born 1834 Speldhurst!

Nor can I find a Mary Jane b 1877 in Framfield, the only one is a Mary Jane Stevens b. 1878  No mary Reed - without the Jane - only one was b. 1876 in Eastbourne

Sorry!

Sorry but I've been looking for your William and Mary Jane as Lipscombe on the 1901 census but can't find them.  Can you be more precise about their location?
Of the 2 Mary Lipscombes born in Sussex in 1901, one was considerably older and the other was residing in Portslade, but her age (27) doesn't seem to match with the other info you have given.

I did find the couple's marriage in Staines in 1898 and two of their children, one whose birth was registered in Brentwood and another back in Staines, but get the feeling that somewhere along the line your Mary has found it necessary to be a little less truthful about her year of birth.

Do you think the one in Portslade is her (born c 1873) for that may help you find her on the 1881 census to start with.

Later births are as follows
but correct Brentwood to read Brentford
Births Sep 1913  Lipscombe  Mary M E  Reed  Brentford  3a 134

Births Mar 1916   Lipscombe  Clara A E  Reed  Staines  3a 32

Births Jun 1921 Lipscombe  Phyllis V K  Reed  Staines  3a 37

Thanks for the update on the 1901 will go back and see if I can spot anything.
What are her son's names and why do you think she did not say she was born in Sussex?

Roy

Found the 2 kids you mentioned in Feltham (Joseph and William Lipscombe) and a number of Brighton Reids, but no sign of the parents William & Mary Lipscombe.  Only Mary around the age you gave came from Walthamstow and lived in Enfield.

I can't think the parent's surname has been miss spelt otherwise the children's names would be wrong too, therefore can only think the parents have been missed off the 1901 index altogether.  Do you have an actual print out of the 1901 census showing them?
