Forehill Ely Pub
« on: Saturday 16 February 08 06:33 GMT (UK) »

A Mrs Ann Moll (nee Dooler) was the publican of the "Round of Beef" for many years until she died in 1883. I have found records in Pigots, Post Office etc on the net including the 1881 census.

I have seen one old photo of Forehill Ely some time ago but have been unable to relocate it.
I wonder if anyone can shed any light on the actual location or a picture of the pub/building?

(My computer with all my other info and my genie program on it crashed yesterday so sorry for being a little vague.)

Any local info on Mrs Susannah Moll's shop in Broad St at that time would also be appreciated.

Cheers,

I have found a photo of the "Round of Beef " in a book by Pamela blakeman and Mike Petty. The book's just called "Ely" and is from the "Images of England "series. The photo is on page 57. I think I must have got the book from the Cambridgeshire Family History Society.

The caption under the photo says that it is of Broad Street in 1902 and that The Round of Beef stands next to Henry Hall's new Forehill brewery of 1871.

There are a couple of other photos-one of forehill which says that the pub was slighly set back and so not visible in that photo and one looking along broad St which says that "the Round Of Beef" "stands centrally in the distance. You can't see the pub sign in that photo but it looks as if the pub was at the bottom of Forehill facing along Broad St.

One of the captions says that the pub has now been demolished.

I can't find any pictures of Mrs Moll's shop-do you know what kind of shop it was ?There are a couple of pictures of broad St in the book-one showing shops.

Hi Tizme, there's a photo from the 1930s in the 2007 book by Patrick Ashton called "Ely Inns - A History of Ely Inns and Beer Houses".

ISBN 0-903616-23-8

There's a list of the landlords including:

1856-1858 Ann Dooler
1859-1867 Edward Moll
1869-1883 Ann Dooler

and it says that in 1856 Ann was charged with "having her house open for the sale of beer before half past twelve on Sunday 19th for which she was fined 20s and 10s costs". Ann married Edward Moll and continued as the landlord after his death.

George Dobson took over in 1883.

Anneb, thats is very interesting information.
I will look in the local library catalogues to see if that series of books is listed as I am sure my wife would love a copy of the picture.
Looking at the 1881 census, there is a series of places including a printing office,Shoe and Leather shop - then two households in what is called the Round of Beef yard, then the Round of Beef itself.
Having never seen Ely and Fore Hill, we are assuming that the Round of Beef yard was out the back.
Right next door is a Mr Arthur Hall (Brewer) and his family.
Looking at all of this, I wonder if Arthur started up in1871 then took over Ann's place after she sold up or died?
All very intriguing, especially to my wife whose ancestors lived there so long ago.
On another Ely website (found on my now dead computer) was an article about Halls brewery and a photo of the same but in a different location I think. Perhaps Arthur Hall was a brother.

Ricky.
Thanks for the link to those photos on the Frith site. I was actually loading one from there a couple of days ago when my computer coughed and died. Ominous eh. Undecided
I took another look this morning here on my wife's computer and the 2 of Forehill are newer than the one I remember.  The site looks familiar so maybe it was there originally.

Andrew - wonderful, thank you. Yes Edward married Ann in 1859 but died in 1868 from memory.
Another publication to track down. Thanks for that.

As for Edward's mother Susannah Moll, the shopkeeper in Broad St., I will take another look through  the 1869 PO Directory and see if I can find what sort of shop it was.

Thanks folks. Smiley

OK, I have re-located the photo of Forehill Ely that I had seen before.

Both the photos and the following description of Ely may be useful to others too.

I've been going through the book of photos again and have found a picture of Ely Trinity workhouse which "stood behind the Round of Beef" pub.I've tried to scan the photos but they only come out as a dark blur- I don't know if this is me or the photos which are quite dark anyway

I'd not heard of this workhouse before so don't know when it was built etc. The only Ely workhouse I'd come across was the Union workhouse which later became the Tower hospital.

I have a book, Ely Inns,1984,  which shows the Round of ,Beef existed before 1837 and was closed by 1937. It was situated on Forehill facing down Broad Street . Next to it is The Maids Head.

Thanks Rose, that helps with the timeline for the place and another pub name as neighbour to assist in the search.

AndrewMartin, I wonder - was there a Joseph Dooler listed prior to Ann on the list of
Publicans by any chance?

I have been told that there is a possiblity Ann was married to him prior to 1857.

hello,

no unfortunately not. Ann Dooler's predecessor as landlord at the Round Of Beef was Robert Osbourne (1850-1851). It seems that Ann was the 2nd and 4th landlords of the pub. There's no sign of a Joseph Dooler.

Thanks for the prompt reply Andrew, it was worth a try.
Interesting though to note that the pub may have been without a publican for about 4 or 5 years.
Could get an awful thirst in that time.  Wink

Another point of interest is that although she 'stepped aside' for her husband Edward until his death, she is recorded in your source as Ann Dooler again for her second term while "Post Office Directory of Cambridgeshire" 1869 and 1879 and "Kelly's" 1883 record her as Mrs Ann Moll.

Almost as if she re-activated her old license - or never surrendered it in the first place.
