« on: Sunday 17 February 08 00:16 GMT (UK) »

hello

i recently found a relative that went to America in 1905,David Roberts.i have found the passenger list with him on ,looks like my relative David Roberts was traveling with a john Jones.from wrexham.i dont no if there was family out there before and he could of been going to stop with them?
it also says he was marryed but there was no wifes name on the list i think.

what i do no is that he died in 1907 on DEC 1 1907 in the Naomi mine disaster in which 34 people died
from the newspapers i found that he was a fire boss and was one of the last to be found.

i just want to no as much as i can about David,like did he have children in America,did he go and live with relatives when he first arrived in America etc
                                                                              and was the disaster his fault?Huh?

Did your David have a brother George also killed in the Naomi explosion??

http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/PAWESTMO/2007-12/1197646162

and at this site:

http://patheoldminer.rootsweb.com/faynaomi1.html

Roberts, David
(Welsh Miner, Fire Boss ca.1907, Naomi Mine, Fayette Co., PA, Age 39 or Age 45, single.);
(Immigrated from Denbighshire north east Wales ca.1894.);
(Killed.  Killed in an explosion of firedamp and coal dust, in the Naomi Mine, Dec. 1, 1907.);
(Naomi Mine Disaster of Dec. 1, 1907.)

No George Roberts listed but there was an American Charles Roberts.

There is a considerable amount of information on-line regarding this mine disaster.

hello lissam

the first post you sent me was a bit to late for the david roberts i was looking for as
he died in 1907,
is there any chance you could do an early search for the same place.

and could you do a search for Mount Carmel PEN,this is where i belive david roberts was going ,according to the passenger list.
it also said he was joining up with an antie and uncle,at this place.

if i could get any information out of this that would be amazing for me
thank you very much for your help,and im sorry if ive repeated myself on other posts

Hello Ian,      a much nicer name than "slothbear", by the way    Smiley

I wasn't looking for your David Roberts as he died in 1907 in the mining accident and you said he traveled to America in 1905  therefore he won't be showing in the 1900 nor the 1910 census listings.

You mentioned he possibly had other relatives  living in the area he was going to  and had travelled with a John Jones.    So possibles for those connections was what I posted.

From the Naomi mine information, he was single  so don't think we will be finding a widowed wife and off spring  ---   and as you have seen,  there are likely to be 300+ widows of miners in 1907 in this area!

Do you have names/ birth dates for the Aunt and Uncle in Mount Camel, PA??  There are MANY Welsh miners with these very common names in these areas.   Without your David available to make an association or more information,  very difficult to pick them out.

Regards,
lissa    Smiley
