On the 1841 Census for Warwick Gaol it states that my 2x Gt Grandfather
THOMAS FITT- c1811 was an inmate of the said establishment.
Whooppee!!! The Prisoners online website for Warwick - I must find him now,
NO Nothing
So a visit to Warwick Records Office where I checked through there files, alas to no avail. Not even the papers.
A cousin of mine has been to Birmingham to check out the Magistrate court records, still nothing. The papers, still nothing..........
What am I missing or where am I going wrong!!!!!!!
You know the saying curiosity killed the cat, well that's me at the moment, I desperately want to find out what he did wrong. He was stated as an Accountant on some family certs. Did he cook the books and get found out or has he taken his misdemeanor to the grave with him
Has anyone any other thoughts they can share on this
Sheila

These are the names I am researching and the further I delve the further apart the country is. Clarke, Fitt, Foulkes, French, Harris, Hobbs, Mckenna, Mottoul, Pugh, Scull, Smith, Spalding, Sprigg, Thomas, Wright. A right mixture here, England, Ireland, Wales & Belgium

I also had someone in the same prison and no mention of him on that website. I did wonder if he was doing some work there and that they had put him mistakenly down as a prisoner, perhaps yours was doing the accounts?

I never thought of that!! maybe that is what it is, they don't make it easy do they.
You would think that they could put there hands onto documents straight away for prisons wouldn't you, even in those days. I am glad I am not the only one who has hit a dead end on this one, it certainly gives you food for thought
I even started to wonder if he was a Chartist, as that was going on about the same time in Birmingham and around the country
Maybe one day it will come to light but for now I shall just let my imagine run rife with it
Thanks for sending me a reply to this query

Where was he before 1841?
Which parish.
Could he have been in prison and then his trail came up and he was found not guilty - this would explain it not being in the newspapers. If it was a busy court then the newspaper wouldn't report on everyone - just the most juicy cases (just like today) so perhaps it wasn't something interesting.
The court records at Warwick record office are not complete so that is a good reason you can't find him in thoses.
try the national archives crown minute books for the midland circuit - see if they contain the details?

Hi Lemontree
Many thanks for replying to me
Thomas must have been in Birmingham prior to 1841 as his son was born there in 1840 and the family were living in Bristol St on the census for 1841, minus Thomas of course. I didn't realise that the records were incomplete at Warwick so that makes feel a little better about not finding him, also the other explanations that you gave too, many thanks for that. He couldn't have been in there long as he had another child in 1842
I shall certainly try the National Archives just to see if there is anything on him
Thanks Sheila
