Mysterious Birds - born Souldrop
« on: Sunday 17 February 08 13:59 GMT (UK) »

Looking for Mary, Esther and Daniel Bird, all born Souldrop, Bedfordshire - can anyone help please?

Census 1871 - Huddersfield RG10/4368 f.20 p.33
Francis Zipfel head   43 b. Norwich
Mary Zipfel    wife     42 b. Souldrop Bedfordshire
Esther Zipfel   dau   19          "
Maria Zipfel        "       1   b. Huddersfield

Census 1881 - Huddersfield RG11/4381 fol.108 p.23
Francis Zipfell head 51 b. Norwich
Mary Zipfell   wife   49 b. Souldrop
Maria Zipfell    dau  16 b. Huddersfield
Daniel Bird  stepson 24 b. Souldrop

I'm assuming Francis Zipfel married Mary ? who was previously married to a Mr. Bird with children Esther & Daniel but can't find them before 1871
I have Daniel from 1881-1901, but nothing for Esther apart from 1871 census.
Francis Zipfel died 1890, haven't found Mary in 1891 yet.

Can anyone help?

FreeBMD has a one sided marriage of Francis Zipfell in Apr/Jun 1887 at Huddersfield vol 9a page 573,  one-sided as the entry does not show any other party. But going into full marriage index lookup, I find it is Mary Bird also married in that quarter & on same vol/page

Thanks for the speedy reply John, I had seen the one-sided entry for Francis, but I thought (should have known better by now) that the marriage was too late for this couple so hadn't looked up the bride  Undecided

How interesting, so they didn't marry until 1887  Huh  Wonder who she married first then and if he was still alive when she was living with Francis.

Thanks very much for that,
Barbara

No I'm not sure of anything, just assuming she was perhaps a widow and I hadn't seen that 1841 entry
Some family member thought she might previously have been called Fosket, but that's hearsay only, and it threw me off the scent a bit - unless of course there were two Marys and 2 marriages

thanks Ricky

There are two Daniel Birds who married Elizabeths - Burgess in Souldrop in 1851 and Fossey in Ampthill in 1853. I think the Ampthill family is a red herring

Yes   I can see they have a daughter Mary A but she is only b 1838...so too late for the missing Mary .

I can see who I think is Francis 1841 then nothing until 1871 the name is open to many mis-transcriptions I bet ,

Yes thanks, I should have said, I followed that  Daniel Bird b. Ampthill through the census, and he's in the 1881 Luton at the same time as 'my' Daniel is in Huddersfield

And yes, Francis Zipfel is a little mystery all on his own, born Norwich c.1828, think I've got him in East Dereham Norfolk in 1841 aged 10 staying in an inn, then nothing til he turns up in Huddersfield in 1871 as a hawker, his family were all clockmakers so I don't know why he's gone awol except that his mother died in 1838.  And yes, the name is open to very many mistranscriptions, Tipple, Lipfel, you name it.... this last query has come about because I amended Griffiths to Zipfell on ancestry's 1881 index and a family member has got in touch with me through ancestry to find out more about about Mary & Daniel

Oh thanks very much John, that's a brilliant variation to add to my list, (Clockhill) -- well done for the death reg and the 1891, you're a star!
