Whitehaven coalmines @1900
« on: Sunday 17 February 08 21:09 GMT (UK) »

I understand that my Gt Gt Grandfather worked in one of the Whitehaven mines around 1900. I am interested in any information or links for around this time especially regarding disasters and casualties. The family story is that Gt Gt Grandfather successfully led a party of men out to safely following a serious incident around this time.  Any info would be most welcome.. Regards Lincsbabe Grin

Hi Lincsbabe

You should find something of interest here http://www.dmm.org.uk/lom/index.htm

Wellington Pit lost over 100 men in a 1910 disaster http://www.dmm.org.uk/colliery/w063.htm

Also here - Amanda is a "Whitehaven lass" now living in Canada who has much interest in Whitehaven mines and the disasters there.  Her book 104 Men commemorating the 60th anniversary of one of these disasters came out last year.  http://www.pitmen.co.uk/

Other Whitehaven people visit the website.
