Howlett Family
« on: Sunday 17 February 08 22:41 GMT (UK) »

Trying to track the parents of William Howlett born circa 1810 in Fakenham.  Married an Ann Watts of Wisbech in 1837.  Have traced him through the census returns until his death in 1865 in Newport, Monmouthshire and in each he is recorded as a veterinary surgeon.  Any help appreciated.

Hi

Did he leave a will?  Often, people will mention family from elsewhere in their will.

What did he call his children?  Any unusual names?

Were there any Norfolk born people living with him in any of the census?

There were several Howlett families in the area, so a look at the Parish registers could help too, but although he put that he was born in Fakenham, that isnt always true.

Best wishes.

Hi

this one's a stab in the dark, and may not be the one you are looking for, so treat it with caution (not many messages come with a health warning Wink)

Norfolk Marriage Index 1801-1837 shows only one Howlet(t) marriage in Fakenham

John Howlet married Maria Oughton on 1 Oct 1804

check out this site,
http://www.norfolksources.norfolk.gov.uk/default.aspx

click on the probate button then search for John Howlett

the first one mentions John Howlett an Innkeeper and his son William

but don't forget, as Teddy says there are a lot of Howlet(t)s in the area

regards
yokel

Hi

Yes, Yokel, that's why I asked about names, there are some unusual names in that will, ones that one would expect to be carried onto other generations perhaps........................

One problem with people who moved from one side of the Country to another, is that they would often give their place of birth as the nearest town, as tiny villages were unheard of.  Some even just gave Norwich as that was the only place in Norfolk known to people in their new abode.

When I worked in France in 1978, people hadn't even heard of Norfolk, so I used to say that I was from the "Bump on the right"  they mostly knew that there was a "bump" on the side of England, so that was enough!
