McGregor family ..Scotland to Canada
« on: Monday 18 February 08 01:02 GMT (UK) »

Hi everyone  Smiley

This is my first time posting on the Canadian boards... I am hoping that we can trace this family back as a gift to my best friend.

The information I have at the moment is this:

Ruth Helen McGregor was born 31 Aug 1905 , Windsor (we think), Canada. She died 23 Feb 1998 in North Carolina , USA.

Her parents were : Thomas McGregor and Edith McGregor nee Thomas , both born Canada.

Ruth had an older brother , Frank, possibly Francis and and older sister ...we are waiting for further information ..ie; marriage info of Thomas and Edith and siblings of Ruth.

Hopefully we can get back to the 'roots' of this family. I feel a little lost here as I am so used to searching England ...  Undecided

Thanks everyone ... Looking forward to any info

You're very welcome  Grin  Grin
I love it when there's results like this!

Found them in 1901 Census - no kids yet, so Josephine possibly was the first. They are living with his parents, James and Lydia.
Will PM you details  Wink

Looks like Franklin moved to Michigan abt 1905, he's on 1930 Census with a new wife.
Will PM you details  Wink

He lived to a good age :-
Go to the LDS site:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

and look him up in Social Security Indexes - died Apr 1868,
born 7 Jan 1872 Canada

Also on LDS is the transcription of 1881 Canada Census, he's there too with parents and sibs!

So much popping up - I'm having trouble keeping up  Grin  Grin  Grin

Got Franklin (well pretty sure it's him, same man as 1930 anyway) in  1920 Michigan (details sent)

Can't really find him in 1910 (the 1930 said he arrived in US 1905)  - have found a possible, but in Oregon.....

Got Josephine crossing into Michingan in 1915 as a 12year old.
Seems to be with a brother named Glenn who is a year older!
Edith McGREGOR their mother, is still in Bothwell Ontario (place matches one of those Census')  Their US contact is an Uncle, named Charles PERRY

Josephine  permanently immigrated 1926 as a 24 year old. She may have preferred and used the name Elizabeth, too..... This record has her a Elizabeth Josephine, born right date in Euphemia, Lambton - but she was moving from Windsor Ontario - so there's that link in to what your friend knew.  This record  also has her Mother named as Edith, living in Windsor (and we are pretty sure Franklin was in Michigan by 1920 at least with a new wife......possibly a divorce then?

She (Elizabeth Josephine) also crossed back to US in 1945 - single, born 12 Sep 1902.

Josephine  may never have married  - check the Social Security - her death indexed as McGREGOR 14 Jun 1988 in Michigan

Franklin's marrige, and that of his brother Alexander are transcribed here:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maryc/lamb00.htm

Yes, it appears Ruth was was from Franklin's first marriage to Edith THOMAS  Grin

All seems to be stacking up - the 1911 Census (on that link above) has Edith 33 with her children Glen 9, Josephine 8 and Ruth 5 all in Euphemia.  Edith is listed as "Wife" but Franklin is not at home...!

Pretty sure he is that one in 1910 Oregon  enumerated as a Farm worker age 37 b Canada and single. Scottish father, Canadian mother.

Can't find Franklin's birth or any oif his sibs on the Ontario Births, 1869-1909

Can't find Edith's death (she was still alive in 1929 when her son Glenn crossed into Detroit)
Ontario Deaths, 1869-1934

Can find Edith's birth:
Ridgetown, Cty Kent, Ontario
Edith Orrila THOMAS born 14 Nov  1877 to parents: Henry THOMAS, Tinsmith and Phoebe Evilina PARISH?? (Phoebe's  name is a bit hard to make out)

She's on the 1881 at the LDS site - named as Edith A THOMAS, in Elgin East, Ontario.

I can here all the whooping from here  Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin

I have to go and make like a hiusewife - but take stock and then come back and let me know of specifics to have a look for if you like. (I guess trying to find Josephine in US Census 1930.....and that Charles PERRY fellow would be two things?? ) I did see Glenn going into Detroit 1915 and 1929 will get that later and send it on .

Not sure abt the SSN what that will give you more than what you have online - perhaps an address? Try googling for info as to what a full SS record gives
