Great Grandad Arthur Grubb
|
Is there anyone that can help me find details of the birth or baptism of my G x2 Grandfather. His name was Sidney/Sydney Grubb. We have documents using both spellings of Sidney and occasionally a middle name of Charles. We believe he was born c1819. His parents were William and Hannah Grubb. On Hannahs death certificate the address is listed as 2 Lily Court, Southampton Street which I believe is in the parish of St Giles. He was one of 3 or 4 brothers. Any help would be gratefully accepted. Many thanks Sarah.

Looking at the 1851 census, William is shown as born Woodcote Oxfordshire, so there must be a chance that they were all born in the vicinity.
Can't find sidney yet though !

There are census details of a Sidney GRUBB born Reading in 1821 - I wonder whether this is him. Do you know his wife's name, any children's names, where and when did he die (there is a Charles Sydney death in 1878 Windsor) ??
A few more details will assist research
Harry

My word Harry you have been busy. The details we have are as follows: He married Charlotte Rider in 1836. The 1851 census shows her living with her mother at 94 Southampton Street with her 2 children Mary and Charles. It shows her as "wife of a soldier". We have also found the 1821 birth but are concerned that if all these facts are correct he was only 15 or 16 when he married Chalotte, a much older woman. He deserted the army in 1840 and the details we have state that he was 21. It is a known fact that Charlotte died on the 27 June 1853, we have her death certificate. He remarried my Great x2 Grandmother, Harriet Smith in 1859. They then moved to Windsor and yes, he is registered as Charles Sydney on his death certificate. It has been quite confusing as he had 2 sons called Charles by both his wives. I hope this helps you. Thanks Sarah

Sarah,
Looking at Genuki, Woodcote was covered by South Stoke and Goring prior to 1952. In South Stoke (from a PR transcription courtesy of OFHS):
Marriage 22 Feb 1798 - William GRUBB, b, St Giles Reading, by licence to Hannah SHERWOOD, sp. Witnesses William CLAXSON and Edward Edwards (he appears lots).
Baptisms (father William, mother Hannah): 16/3/1800 - James 24/9/1802 - Susanna 2/12/1804 - William 7/2/1813 - Isaac 21/7/1815 - Charles
These are the only records for the GRUBB surname.

Sarah,
I can't find Sidney in 1851 - I wonder whether he went back to the army (either voluntarily or otherwise ??).

Sarah,
There are quite a few GRUBB baptisms on the IGI in St Giles, which will give you more of the family.
There are no early baptisms recorded (prior to 1800), so I wonder where William was born ??. Also Hannah SHERWOOD's birth is not registered in South Stoke.
Incidentally, I can only see one Charles GRUBB (son of Sidney), although his age changed between census.
Charles GRUBB - baptism St Giles Reading 12/2/1843 - father Sidney, mother Charlotte.

Hi Harry I don't know whether you have received the replies Mum has sent to you. I left her in charge whilst I went back to work and I can't find any trace of her replies. I would like to thank you so much for your hard work. You have given us some wonderful information and your efforts are much appreciated. Thanks again Sarah
