Hit a Brickwall 1600's Help!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: Tuesday 19 February 08 02:27 GMT (UK) »

Thanks to help from Barbara I have got back to my 7x great grandparent's on my mother's side of the family.

Lythe BT's
24 Jan 1692 married  Thomas Huttchinson & Ayls Marshall ( 7x Great grandparent's)

The closest Ayls i can find is on IGI;
AYLSE MARSHALL
Christening:
11 MAR 1666      Settrington, Yorkshire, England
Father:     HENRY MARSHALL

Now the problems begin.
I found a Henry Marshall married Mary Frear 15 MAY 1655  Settrington, Yorkshire, England
Children were;
Ellen 1656, Mary 1658, Jane 1660, Elizabeth 1663, Aylse 1666, William 1668-1669, Henry 1670, & William 1673. All born Settrington.
Great you say what's your problem I would love to have my family back that far.
Well here it is;
Birth Henry Marshall 1630 Settrington
Submitted Entry IGI
Henry Marshall
Birth:  Settrington, Yorkshire, England
Christening:  24 JAN 1629      <Settrington, Yorkshire, England>
Parents: Wm.
Extracted IGI
HENRICUS MARSHALL
Christening:  24 JAN 1630      Settrington, Yorkshire, England
Father:     WILLIMI. MARSHALL
Henry had a brother Christopher. Here is his extracted entry.
CHRISTOPHERUS MARSHELL
Christening:
20 JAN 1625      Settrington, Yorkshire, England
Father:     GULIELMI MARSHELL
Ref for both are
Batch No.:     Dates:
P007771     1559 - 1812
All the males in this family have US added to their names. The daughter Jane was Jana. All have father Willimi ( I take it that is William mispelt ) except for Christopher.

Now Mary;
Extracted IGI
Batch No.:     Dates:
P007771     1559 - 1812
MARIA FREARE
Christening:     16 SEP 1635      Settrington, Yorkshire, England
Father:     JOHANIS FREARE

These are the closest matches I can find.

Question's.
Is Henry Henry or Henricus ?
Is his father William or Gulielmi ?
Do I take it that Maria is Mary and her father is Johanis ?
Taking into account this is the 1600's where would Gulielmi and Johanis have come from and how?
   Any help would be much appreciated as i do not want to go up the wrong tree!!!!!!.

Regards
Carol

Hi Carol,

I'll no doubt be going back to Middlesbrough Library in a week or two so if no-one else replies I can look at Settrington transcripts for you.  I think I did give you a link to the reference library to show which transcripts they hold.

Guilielmus etc was just the old way of spelling William, same with Henricus etc, depending on whether records were kept in Latin etc, I think you'll find a lot of this the further back you go.  Ayls could be Alice...
This webpage, although about German names, gives a table showing the variants recorded in different languages, just scroll down to the chart for some examples:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/RG/guide/Germany25.asp

By the way, just a point, Settrington is in East Yorkshire, and about 35 miles away from Lythe

Thank you again.

Looks like I'm on the right track so will carry on.
Thank you for telling me where Settrington was/is.

Good morning,

I was trawling the old Look up Requests and came across your message. Don't know whether this might help.
Have you tried Internet Archive ? They have transcriptions of the Yorkshire Parish Register Society, one of them being Settrington from 1559 to 1812.

If you need the link let me know.

Hi there

Settrington parish register entries on ancestry.co.uk

Aysle daughter of Henry Marshall was baptized the 11th day March 1666

Henricus filius Willimi Marshall  baptizatus fuit 24 die Januarie 1629 (Henricus would be the latin name for Henry, Willimi for William - Gulielmi is another latin name for William). The new year for 1630 started in March hence why you have a record of his baptism in 1629 and 1630 , quite often people convert the baptisms to calendar years.

Maria filius Johanis Freare bapt. fuit decimo sexto (16) die September 1635 (the new year for 1635 started April ).

These were the actual entries mainly in Latin I am afraid, but it means you do have the actual parish register. I will see if there are any entries for Willimi / Johanis for you as the Settrington registers go back to 1559.

All the best

Shirl

PS Here is Henry's sibling  - Christopherus filius Gulielmi Marshell baptizatus fuit postremo (last) die Januarie 1624 - the new year started March 1625

If you haven't tried Internet Archive, I would recommend you give this link a try:

www.archive.org/index.php

When you get the Home page, click on the box on the right "Texts". On the next page type in "Yorkshire Parish Registers" in the Search Box. You will then get a whole list of Volumes, which unfortunately do not have Parish names.  You need to go to Volume 38 for Settrington.

All these archives have been transcribed by the University of Toronto into print form. It might help you !

Good hunting,

Nick
