Where to find an inquest report for a Nailstone death?

Hi

I've got a copy of the death certificate for my Nan's sister who died in 1911 aged 5.  Cause of death is recorded as 'Shock caused by being accidentally burnt in a field at Nailstone'.  (We have been told over the years that some boys were throwing lit matches and her dress caught fire).  The inquest was held by the Deputy Coroner for South Leicestershire on 21st August, 1911 and I would be very interested in hearing what an inquest report may have to say.  I understand that a local paper report may be the only way to find out.  Does anybody have any ideas at all about which paper this may have been reported in if indeed it ever was, or where I should start looking for this?

of that time.
Which are on Microfilm at the Records Office
Then I’ll report back on this thread .?

But I need the Surname of your relative.
If you are not happy to post that name on this thread then send me a Private Message via this site along with the date of her death which might well have been several weeks before the Inquest.

Hi Mike, that's very kind of you if you don't mind?

Her name was Frances Eleanor Talbot (on the certificate, Talbott as far as we are aware), and her date of death was actually only two days before the inquest, August 19th 1911.  I commented to my Mum on how soon afterwards the inquest was, as you said, I was under the impression that there was usually a lengthy gap.

“ Newsworthy “ at the time.

Yes their seemed not to hang about in those days I looked up someone last year
Who died had an inquest held and buried all within in Four days back in 1865 ……

Not like today……. Personally I’m still waiting some 18 months after the tragic death of my niece and her daughter in a car fire….. Cry

Thanks for that  Smiley.  She was actually known as Nellie and in fact it took until the 1911 census came online for me to find her.  My Mum & Aunt had thought that her name was Ellen but then on the census she was listed as 'Nellie'.  I then wondered if that had actually been her name as my Nan, her sister, was Lily & not Lilian, but a search for Nellie happened to bring up Frances Eleanor.  Sorry, waffling now, but it was an exciting moment when I finally tracked her down lol!

So sorry to hear about your niece and her daughter.  My family suffered the tragic death of my cousin and his fiancee in a car accident caused by somebody else so I know how devastating these things are.  In that case we were waiting for 15mths for the case to come to court, which was bad enough.  I hope you and your family get everything sorted out before too long.

An Inquest held at the Bulls Head Inn Nailstone on Monday
By The District Deputy Coroner Mr Frederick Bouskell
Into the death of France Ellen TALBOT aged 5
daughter of William Talbot Farm Labourer. Nailstone Who died last Saturday
Mrs Talbot said on Saturday afternoon the little girl went out to play with Dolly WALES.
About 3.00’clock Dolly came back and said
“ Mrs Talbot ..Nellie’s frock is on fire in the fields “   
Witnesses ran to the stile and saw several people in the field
Some one then took witnesses home
Shortly after wards Tom Bailise came carrying the little girl in his arms.
Witnesses did  not see her till shortly before she died about 4.30.pm.
“ Comment by Coroner “ Deceased had no matches to his knowledge “.

Mrs Catherine FAULKNALL said she was at home at about 3.00 o’ clock when she heard some children screaming in the field close to her house She went out and her husband told her  “ a little girl was on Fire “
She took a rug and went to the field and saw some men putting the grass out which was on fire near to where the children were.
Deceased was in flames Witnesses gave Thomas Bailies the rug which he wrapped around the child and then carried her home.
Witnesses went with him and examined the child and found her

…………………………….CLOTHING NEARLY ALL BURNT OFF ……………………..

She was burnt very badly on face, chest, and lower part of her body
Witnesses dressed the burns with linseed oil and a Doctor was called for …….
Witnesses asked how this happened ? She said she was in the field with Charlie Ison And Alec Wale making a chock hole then struck a match on a stone and made a fire.

Thomas Stretton Bailies said at about quarter to 3.00 of the clock he was reading in his porch at his house. Then someone was screaming in the Haywood’s field which was opposite his house he went there and saw the deceased with her clothes in flames. He ran to her and tried to put out the flames he shouted for a rug Someone brought him one. He wrapped her in it and put out the flames
He then carried he home.
He afterwards went back to the field and found some rags and paper in a hole in the bank it was not alight but he could see that it had been burning at some time.

Alec Wales a schoolboy Seven years old said he was playing in Haywood’s Field with Charlie Ison aged 5 and Nellie Talbot and some other children
There was a chock hole in the field. Hilda Talbot aged 4 and Charlie Ison put rags and paper in it “ Ison set it on fire with some matches he had got.”
Nellie Talbot was against the hole and turned around when her frock caught fire
She began to scream He unfastened her belt on her frock and burnt his fingers
He tried to un do the other belt but could not do it.
Dr Thomas Nash Wilson of Ibstock said he saw the deceased on Saturday and
Found her to be burnt nearly all over her body He dressed the wounds but could
See that it was a hopeless case.

The deceased died from shock. …..It was a very Distressing case.
The jury returned a verdict of  “ Accidental Death “

Mike, thank you so much for doing that.  It certainly was upsetting to read but please don't remove it.  my poor great grandmother, you can't even begin to imagine what it must have been like.  Unfortunately Hilda, also mentioned in the story, also came to a tragic end when she took her own life as a young adult, another family member that I'm hoping to look into in time.

I only started researching my family history last November and Nellie is the first real mystery that I feel is now fully solved thanks to your help, I think  I might see if I can find her grave on my next visit to family in Nuneaton.

Thanks again and I hope it didn't take up too much of your time, it was really very kind of you.

You should try the records office at Wigston who may still have the original file and you may be able to have access to it.
