North Leicestershire Coroners inquests
« on: Tuesday 19 February 08 07:20 UTC (UK) »

I'm am hoping that someone could help me please. I am trying to find the coroners report of a William Potterton who died in Thurmaston in 1884. The inquest was held by the North Leicestershire coroner and I am having trouble finding where the archives are held.
I have asked at the Leicester records office and all the have are the South Leicestershire records, I have also contaced the coroner's office in Loughborough but they couldn't help me.
All I have at the moment is a short newspaper article reporting on the inquest and was interested to see if I could find out a little bit more.

Hello whizzy

William Potterton is my x3 Great Grandfather and I have also been trying to trace the coroners report for some time but with no success. I too have the newspaper article but nothing more and wondered if you have had any luck?
Can I ask what your connection is to William?

Kind regards

just googled north leics coroner and come across the coroner services charter for Leicester, leicestershire & Rutland. it lists on the back page:

HM Coroner for Rutland and
North Leicestershire District
34 Woodgate
Loughborough
Leicestershire
LE11 2TY
Tel: 01509 268 748

this may be where you have already tried but thought I'd put it on in case it is different address.

Hi Diddy,
I know I didn't reply during the half term holiday, but I would be extremely grateful if the offer of a bit of help still stands. If you can't help don't worry I'll give them a ring.
Many thanks

Whizzy - no worries. I'm a bit tied up in evenings now with flute exams but if you want to ring them first that would help. i f they have the reports or anything else i.e report in local paper the echo - i could pick it up / pass on details for you. I work 3 days a week so theres always a moment and i'm on the doorstep so to speak!!

You can always send me a PM if easier.

Hi,

Coroners have a legal duty to keep records for 15 years after which they go to the local records office (in this case it is in Wigston) for a further 75yrs. It is then up to the keeper of archives which cases are kept or not.
I would advise ringing the Wigston records office for further info. I am dissappointed that the Coroners Officers did not point you in that direction.
