Edward D B COTTEN, b.1840 East Indies, in the 1851 Census for Hertfordshire
He's not with his Mother and siblings. Is he at school?
Where is he and who is he with?
Any information greatly appreciated

aaahh I see why I missed it, his birthplace is down as London on ancestry, I was using keyword East Indies

Thanks for your lightning fast replies.
He is a COTTON but not in 1851 - apparently 
He was born in Secunderabad E.I. but his family was in London at this time.
Probably the right dude.
Christs Hospital ...
Does anyone know what sort of place that was?

If you google "Christs School", a good article on wikipedia comes up giving the history of these schools ( also known as Blue Coat Schools)

I'm reposting my thanks as I seem to have wrecked the last one.
Thank you for the links - explains a lot.
His father was insane and his mother had three younger children to care for so this would be a likely place for him to end up. It all worked out well in the end though.
