References to wills?
« on: Tuesday 19 February 08 17:45 GMT (UK) »

Hi,
I wonder if I could call on your expertise.

I understand that the vast majority of pre-1858 Devon wills have been destroyed, but I'm hoping to find a reference to my ggggggg-grandfather, Robert Sam(m)an/Sam(m)on.

The last reference I can find to him is as a baker in Plymouth in the 1770s, when he would have been in his 50s. He was described as being at the Fishmonger's Arms in James Street on Plymouth Dock in 1774. He is also described as a "baker of Plymouth" in a will from 1776.

He was previously of Chelsea, London. This is my only Devon connection so far - and recently discovered.

So I suppose I'm looking for a death or a will reference. What's my best angle of attack?

Many thanks
Rob

 Theres http://www.plymouthdata.info/contents.htm

or you could try Access to Archives - wills.

If you have the year  of death you can try your local Probate Office they publish all Wills from about 1812 onwards.
You just go in and look in the printed books  All in Date Name order. then if you find it, order your will.  last time I went it cost me £5

Hi

You could try the Death Duty Registers 1796 - 1903 on Find My Past and in Documents on Line at the National Archives. I've struck lucky a couple of times.

Thank you both for your ideas. No luck yet - I think I need to search for a death in Plymouth.
