Hi,

I found Sarah Ann GOSELTINE using www.findmypast.com I have a subscription and find it very good value for money as it includes other helpful databases, I also wouldn't be without Ancestry. Sometimes it seems expensive to get subscriptions but if you look at it say on a weekly/monthly basis compared to what is spent on other forms of entertainment it's worth it Smiley

Especially if you're addicted like me Grin

Daisy

Thanks Debbie Smiley

As Debbie's offline I hope she won't mind me answering your question,

Re:

Code:
Marriages Dec 1854
Ball  Elizabeth    Reading  2c 680
Goseltine  George     Reading  2c 680
Hawkins  Thomas     Reading  2c 680
Nethercliff  Sarah     Reading  2c 680

These will be the four names with the same marriage reference number.

I think it was usually 4 marriages per page  before 1851 and 2 marriages after.

Try as I might I can't remember why I think this is the right date, hopefully someone could direct me to a source and/or correct me if I'm wrong Smiley

In 1891 the Gertie Goseltine is down as John Fenn's grandaughter age 7.

She is indeed the Clara Gertrude that Daisy Petal found earlier.

But I believe her parents are John's daughter Elizabeth Fenn and Thomas Goseltine who married in Reading in Dec 1881 ref 2c page 793.

Hi carol
thanks for that connection, i did have gerti down on that cenus, but was wondering where the relationship between them had come from.

Sarah had a brother Called Thomas that showed up on the  census.

In the 1871 census Sarah is living in Shinfield, Berks.
Head of house: Henry Attawell.
Wife: Elizabeth Attawell.
Son of Henry: John Attawell, Age 9.
Daughter of Henry: Elisa Attawell, Age 7.
Son of Henry: Henry Attawell, Age 4.
Son of Elizabeth: Thomas Goseltine, Age 14.
Daughter of Elizabeth: Sarah Goseltine, Age 11.
Son of Elizabeth: George Goseltine, Age 7.

this is the census for Sarah showing her living with her mother and step father , after her birth fathers death.

I wonder now if this is the same thomas Goseltine who married Elizabeth fenn.
This would maybe indicate how John and Sarah met in the first place.

Regards
Alison.

Do you know for certain that Sarah's maiden name was Goseltine?

Have you purchased any of her marriage certs or have you found Herbert(who seeems to have married as HUBERT) 's birth cert?

This IS a very complicated family isn't it  Shocked

I have not purchased certificates, but my dad was born in 1935 and remembers some of the relations. He said Sarah was definenately a Goseltine, and i have been working on the following births/ deaths and census info. makes for a long post, but if i list what i am working on it may help.

There was some confusion over my great grandads christian name, who origionaly my dad said was also a herbert, but this was wrong and it was infact (hopefully) John.

John was born in 1822 in Coggeshell, Essex.
At the age of 20 in 1841 john was residing at Great illford, Barking, Essex with John and Jane Wiltshire, working as their Stable hand.

The 1851 Census shows John was residing at 32 Eccleston Mews, Westminster.
Head of house: John Fenn, Age 29 Occupation was a Groom.
Wife: Jane Fenn, Age 24.
Son: George Fenn, Age 1. (It is believed that George died before he was 10 as there is no mention of him in any other census.)

In 1861 the census shows John residing   Stratfieldsaye, Hampshire.
Head of house:  John Fenn, Age 39, Occupation Groom.
Wife: Jane Fenn, Age 34.
Son: John Fenn, Age 11.
Son: Joseph Fenn, Age 2. (There is no mention of this child in later census.)

In 1871 the census shows John residing at the old dairy house, Stratisfield.
Head of house:  John Fenn, Age 49 Occupation Groom.
Wife: Jane Fenn, Age 45.
Daughter: Elizabeth Fenn, Age 9.

In 1881 the census shows john residing at Duke of Wellingtons Premises, Stratfieldsaye, Hampshire, England.
Head of house: john Fenn, Age 59, Occupation groom/Domestic
Wife: Jane Fenn, Age 54.
Daughter: Elizabeth Fenn, Age 20.

Jane Fenn died in March 1885, Aged 58.

In September 1888 the Marriage of john Fenn to Sarah Anne Goseltine is recorded at Tendring Essex.

In the 1891 census, John is living at Guildford, Surrey.
Head of house: John Fenn, Age 69. Living of off own means.
Wife: Sarah Anne Fenn, Age 30.
Son: Herbert Fenn, Age 4 months.
Grandaughter: Gerti Goseltine, Age 7.

In the 1901 census John is living at 41Radstock Road , Reading, Berks.
Head of house: John Fenn, Age 79. Living of off own means.
Wife: Sarah Fenn, Age 39.
Son: Herbert Fenn, Age 10.

John Fenn’s Death is recorded in December 1903 Reading, Berks. Age 82.

Sarah Anne Goseltine 1860 – 1948.

Sorry for the big post,  hope this helps. Its all very confusing and to a novice like me, the help from this forum has been great.

Alison,

You really do need to purchase one or two certs.

Otherwise you could end up chasing the wrong family,as many of us have done before you  Embarrassed
