Hi everyone,
I'm looking for any information on the Rackham family that were living in Tipton from 1860's up until the late 1800's when along with their children they moved towards West Bromwich.

If this is a request for further information, then please supply what you already hold, and outline what SPECIFIC information you are trying to find for each family member.

I'm looking mainly for any information regarding my Gt Gt Grandmother Sarah Mary Ann Rackham. After her husband, Henry, died she seems to have begun to call herself Mary Ann Rackham in the Census etc...
In 1901 she is living in Railway Cottages, New Road, Tipton, and working as a Church School Caretaker. I know there was a Church with a school in the New Road area, however she may have also worked at other Church schools in the area. I was wondering if there would be any documents still in existance at any of these places that relate to her, or even pictures.
After this point I seem to lose track of her and I haven't been able to find a registered death for her up in the Midlands. The only person slightly resembling her is a Sarah Mary Ann Rackham, who died in 1912 in Wrentham, Suffolk - this women was born in the same year, and to also add fuel to this fire, my gt gt Grandfather was born in Wrentham. Perhaps she decided to retire down there... the mystery is when, how and why.
I hope someone can help with this one.

Ok, let's make sure that you covered all bases before we go further. did you search full indexes? anything labelled freebmd (even on ancestry) is INCOMPLETE. Images may be searched at http://images.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/choose.pl if you don't have ancestry /other access.
Other transcribed indexes which could be of use http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/index.php
Neither do you say how old this woman is/when she was born. Is there a woman of the same name & age (as gg-gma) in census?

Hi,
Yes I've searched all indexes on Microfiche at my local archives library.
I can be sure that this is the same woman as my Gt Gt Grandmother because in the 1891 Census she's living in the same street, all be it a different address, and she still has two of her sons living with her, which have showed up on previous census records with my gt gt grandfather Henry and my gt Grandfather Joseph T Rackham. There wouldn't be anyone else with the same name because my Gt Gt Grandfather was the first Rackham in this area of the West Midlands.
Sarah Mary Ann Rackham (nee Wright) was born in Dudley in around 1834, and she was aged 66 in the 1901 Census.

What about 66-y-olds elsewhere in the country @1901?
if there are no others, then it makes that death reg. more likely..

Hi Populardude,
Welcome to Rootschat.
My local school has log books going back to about 1880. In them the headteacher would keep a daily account of life in the school and names of teachers and other staff would crop up in them. I have been fortunate enough to be allowed access to them for a project. It could be that those schools may have logbooks on the premises or perhaps they have been put in the local archives. It might be worth contacting archives/schools to find out.
Good hunting
Cathy

Firstly, Hi Cathy, thanks for the info. I'll definately have a word at my local archives and see if they have anything there on that particular church school. If not I'll definately see if I can visit the area and find a contact at these relevant places. Once again thanks for your suggestion!! x
Secondly, Hi Willow. Thanks for your reply... I think everything does seem to poin towards the fact that she is my Gt Gt Grandmother, as the birth dates match up, and also the fact her husband was from the same village originally. I think I will order the certificate and find out and see where it can lead me!
Thanks again x

You know there is a Rackhams Dept Store in the Centre of Birmingham, now owned by the House of Fraser, I don't know the history of the Store, would be interesting to find out where the name 'Rackham' originated. Best Wishes from mrswoman.

Hi mrswoman,
thanks for your reply. There was a rumour in the family that my gt grandfathers cousin originally worked at the first drapery store in corporation street in Birmingham City Centre... However I haven't yet followed this up and checked its authenticity!!
I think there must be a connection somewhere as the Rackham name is rare in the Midlands today, let alone in years gone by. I'll definately have to look at this option... cause if it's true I want a discount, haha!!!
Thanks again for your suggestion.

That's most interesting, I really must find the history of the store, as you say I would also presume it started out in humble surroundings, and yes indeed the Rackham name is very rare, you must find out populardude, as you say you could be in for some very big discounts, do let us know if you find out anymore. Good luck from mrswoman.
