Can anyone help on this one please???
I have several members of the Long family on my tree, all from Colyton Devon?or should that be Dorset? Anyhow,I am looking for marriage and family info on Ellen Long from Colyton, born 1837,unsure about this bit? I think she may have married a John Balkwill about 1859?Anything on Ellen and John appreciated.I have looked for a marriage but no luck so maybe I have it wrong? Possible Ellen died in Falmouth, but again unsure.
Regards,
langtry

I am a descendant of John Balkwill and Ellen Long - he is my great grandfather. I have been searching for their marriage details for ages, but no luck. I have asked on numerous sites and have had a search done by Devon Record Office, it may well be that the mariage details have not reached g.r.o. but as I do not know where they were married I can't seach further. They did not marry in either the groom or bride's parishes. I have John's family details back to late 1600's and I have the birth details of John and Ellen's children and Ellen's death certificate. I also have all details of John's second marriage. I would be pleased to exchange information.

Hi Jean, You will have already seen that I too have searched in vane for details of John and Ellens Marriage.Prior to this I had a lot of aggravation looking for correct details of the Long family in Colyton, but having sorted that to reasonable satisfaction(not complete) I started looking at Ellens Husband John Balkwill, and I have to say this man has been and still is quite a mystery person, little can be found linking the two together.I have searched again to-day and drawn a blank,so,because I hate to give up.maybe we should put our heads togetther and start over again??? We need to begin somewhere,so would it be possible to let me have copies of any certificated detail you have and I will have anothe crack at this puzzle? Is it possible that John could have been known by a different name? I will check on Ellen for this. Also details of his second marriage might help me?I only say that because we both probably have differing methods of going about these searches and also we will have different resources???Stabbing in the dark a bit here, but I am willing to try if you are?? I tried the Colyton History Society but no luck there, and the whole thing makes no sense, his second marriage was recorded on certificate? (would like to see that?) so what happened for the first marriage?? could they have left the county to wed elsewhere??? Dozens of questions, few answers, perhaps the next time I might use your own E-Mail address if you have no problem with that?
Best regards,
langtry

Thanks for your reply. I am happy to work together on the mystery of John and Ellen's marriage and to let you have copies of the information I have gathered (including details of the 1861 Census when their surname was mistranscribed!).
I am new to the site and unsure how to let you have my email address without putting it on a general site. Can you advise me what to do or alternatively let me have your email address in some way - as you are a seasoned "poster" you will no doubt have worked this out previously.
Regards.....Jean
