Is St Mary's catholic church in Chilvers Coton still there?
« on: Wednesday 20 February 08 17:34 GMT (UK) »

Hi

I have a marriage in 1858 and one in 1902, both of them at St Mary's catholic church in Chilvers Coton.  When I've googled it, it doesn't bring up a recent photo of it, or even mention it.  Has it changed names, or is it not used anymore?

I'd love to see what it looked like if anyone has an old photo

Thank you

Rosemary

Thanks Julie, that's just what I was looking for Smiley

I don't know why they had to change names, it just confuses people.  Anyway, I think it's going to be hopeless trying to get hold of the parish records for this church - they aren't readily available on IGI, or anywhere else.

It gives me a picture of where my grandfather married his first wife though, and where my gr grandparents were married.

Thanks again

I will see what I can find in Nuneaton Library this coming week, I know they have no Parish Registers in there for the Catholic Church but they do have some burials and I will enquire what else.
Who or what are you looking for as they do have Elecors lists etc.?

St Chads have an archive and keep their own church records, here is the link with contact details

Hi Al

I am interested in the Ford family, who originated from Mayo, Ireland.  They seem to have appeared around 1858, when my gr grandfather Daniel Ford married my gr grandmother Mary Girity/Gerfty/(maybe Garrity or Grady - she was illiterate).

They married at St Marys, as did my grandfather Thomas Ford (1st marriage) to Mary Ann Ward.

Anything you could find would be lovely.  There are brothers and sisters, but it might be best to see if the library even has the records first.

Thank you Al

Hi Rosemary, presume you have all the census details over the years? I see you have two of the family working at the tennis ball works in 1901 together with a boarder! Daniel and Mary's ages seem to meander about a bit, I have deaths for the pair but they don't match the ages from the census.
Knew Bridge Street well and in my younger days many of the older houses were still there but most have now gone, My Maternal Grandparents kept a general shop down there in the early 1900s so would no doubt have known some of your family, I still have a couple of small items from the shop.
You will find some photos of Bridge Street at http://www.search.windowsonwarwickshire.org.uk/engine/theme/default.asp?theme=792 - you can see a couple of the original houses and my Grandparents shop on one of them, Coton Liberal Club now covers the shops. (The ones with the motorbike in front)

Rosemary, these are the Ford entries from The Book Of The Dead.
John, 13-2-1883; Mary Anne, 5-4-1893; Daniel, 18-2-1906; Catherine, 4-4-1909; Mary, 18-6-1909; James, 28-4-1923.
The only graves that can be seen in the Churchyard are fairly modern ones, I believe quite a few graves were removed when Coton Road was widened but most were left untouched.

As regards marriages the Library does not hold them and they suggest you either write or phone the priest or send for certificates, you should get the number off the FreeBMD site.
That's all I have had time to do so far.

These are brilliant Al.  Thank you very much for taking the time to find them.  I've only just discovered this branch of the family after 18 years of looking for evidence of my grandfather.

I'm actually off work at the moment with a virus, but I'll take more time to look through the photos when I'm feeling better.  I just wanted to thank you

Best wishes

Hi Rosemary,

the A2A catalogue lists records from 1859 to 1979, for that church, held at the Birmingham Diocesan Archive (at St. Chad's)

Roman Catholic Church, Our Lady of the Angel's Parish, Nuneaton, Warwickshire

It's well worth looking at catholic parish registers as baptisms usually show mother's maiden name as well as godparents/sponsors and date of birth as well as date of baptism.

Marriage records can be more sparse as the full details went in the civil register.

Al, all but one of those deaths seem to be my family.  Mary Anne 5/4/1893 I'm not sure about.  But thank you for the exact dates for the others.  It's nice to be able to see what Bridge Street looked like, but going by the deaths of the Fords, it doesn't look like there were many left.  My grandfather, Thomas left his wife and children in 1911, never seen again by that family.  He met my grandmother, and my uncle was born in 1919, my mam in 1928.  The years in between are a blank so far.

Looking at the website for St Chads, it looks as though they don't do any form of research.  It doesn't look likely that I will be going down that way as I live in Cumbria, not in the near future anyway.

Has anybody ever enquired about baptisms etc from St Chads?  I recently phoned  for baptism certificates from the catholic church where my mam and uncle were baptised.  The priest couldn't have been nicer, but I suppose all priests are different.

Rosemary, I have Mary A. aged 20 in the 1881 in Daniel's family, havn't checked the 1891 yet. I asked if you had all the census records but you didn't answer.
Have looked at just the 1909 Electors lists so far and found that Thomas Ford lived at 48, Coton Road and James Ford at 87, Coton Road.
Looking at the 1881 it appears that after marrying they went to live at Coventry where three children were born, then there is a ten year gap before the next four were born in Nuneaton, strange!
There is no sign of Daniel in the 1851 so he must have come over after that. One possibility is that they came to Nuneaton by barge as the local diary records many instances of barges of soldiers stopping off in Nuneaton on there way to and from Ireland. Just a thought?

Hi Al

You're right about Mary Anne, I missed her on the 1881 census.  And yes I have got the censuses, sorry about that - I've just got back up properly today, so I was just skimming my messages.
Thank you for the 1909 information. Thomas was living at what looks like 7 Auther Street, Chilvers Coton in 1903, going by his army records.  And when he was discharged in 1911, he gave his address as Coventry Rd, New Wharff.  He certainly moved about didn't he?

That's interesting about Daniel and the barge.  I couldn't find him in 1871, although Mary (his wife) is living in Coventry with her son and daughter James and Mary Ann.  There is a Daniel Ford living at Plymstock, Devon in the 57th Regiment, born in Ireland and aged 28.  I thought it was maybe too young for him, but I suppose it could be after all.  The same year there is a John Ford (grandson) living with Thomas and Catherine Welsh.  One of the other occupants is a John Garratt, aged 20.

I had a thought that Garratt could be related to Daniel's wife Mary, whose maiden name was Girity/Gerfty?  Maybe transcribed wrongly?  Maybe Catherine was Mary's sister?  Or if the ages are wrong, maybe her mother (remarried).

I hadn't noticed the big gap in ages either, maybe it was him in the army, and he was away for a few years?  You never know.

Anyway thanks again

Rosemary, been nosing in the Electors lists again and this is the result

1885; Daniel - cottage in Coton Road
Thomas in cottage in Pot Kilns Close, Heath End.
Things never altered for some years
1895; Daniel, 85, Coton Road, Thomas same as previous
James, 80 Coton Road.
1896 and 97; Daniel in Bridge street
1902; Daniel 74, Bridge Street. James 87 Coton Road, probably same house renumbered, he was still there in 1911.
1903 and 04; Daniel, 133, Coton Road.
I checked in 1910 and 1911 for Thomas especially in Arthur Street but he wasn't there so perhaps lodging and not elligible to vote.
Hope this helps.

Hi Al

Some of these match up, but others are a bit confusing.  They certainly did move about didn't they?  Either that or they re-numbered the houses a lot.

Starting at the beginning -

Thomas was only 6 years old in 1885, so was still living with his parents Daniel and Mary.  Unless there was an uncle Thomas living in Pot Kilns Close maybe?

Daniel was living at 74 Bridge Street on the 1901 census, but on Thomas' marriage certificate he got married from 130 Coton Road (presumably from his parents' house)  Could be the same house in 1903 and 1904 but renumbered.

It was 1903 when Thomas was living at Arthur Street, he was living on Coventry Rd, New Wharff in 1911.

I had another breakthrough today, found new living relations of the Fords, and we're comparing notes at the moment.

Thank you so much for your help - I really appreciate it
