Hi,
I'm looking for information on the Smith Family of Clifton, who were wealthy Cheese manufacturers in this particular area. The head of the family in 1851 was William Smith and he was married to Elizabeth.
On the 1851 Census it states that there was a servant (Groom) working for this family... this seems to be my Gt Gt Grandfather Henry Rackham. I would like to know anything regarding him in connection with this family, and if any thing still survives with reference to documentation of his service record with the Smith Family.
All being that any information that can help with this would be greatly appreciated.

The 1851 shows Henry was aged 24 and b Suffolk - he was working as a groom - not as part of the cheese factory force
I would very much doubt that any records were kept of his employment. Even if they were, they would certainly not be in existence today
In 1841 - Henry was with his parents Samuel & Mary in Suffolk and by 1861 he is married to Sarah and living in Tipton Staffordshire

Thanks for the reply. I did notice that from the Census Henry was working as a groom for the family at their home, and not the Cheese factory.
I do know that from looking on the Derbyshire website that it references a Smith family who made their fortune by Cheese-mongering and owned most of Clifton and Sturston - apparantly it states that they often lived at Clifton Hall and also donated money to playgrounds, a cricket pitch and also the Church. This family seem to be a fairly high status family to be doing such things, therefore this is where my idea for any documentation comes in.
I thought if there was some family history references to the family and workers etc... it might indicate that Henry is definately my Gt Gt Grandfather, as the Census only indicates Suffolk and not the village/town, which would with out doubt identify him.

Hi
If this is the right Henry - you can track him via the later censuses to check if he is the right one.
If he was your Gt Gt grandfather - start with your grandfather and then work backwards. If "all roads" lead to the same Henry then you know you have the right one
No employment records from that period are going to confirm what you want to know
In 1861 he had no children but he only married in the March qtr 1860 to Sarah Mary Ann Wright - ref Dudley 6C 141
If you have Ancestry access you will be able to find him on later censuses and compare any children with the info you have about the family. The 1871 shows him b Wrentham
