1861 Census - anyone decipher?
« on: Wednesday 20 February 08 19:03 GMT (UK) »

Could anyone look at this 1861 census?

RG9 3461 109 29

I am trying to read the place of birth for Mary Fish. It's transcribed as Own, Yorkshire. Above says Cawthorne, below Ecclesfield. I've looked of the other census for her and it varies from Holmfield to Holmfirth.

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks

If it's really Holmfirth where Mary was born, take a look at genuki map, there's a Holmebridge next to it, and next to that is Holme, so I would think that's possibly the enumerator's interpretation of Holme

Have you found her in 1851/41? If not, what was her maiden name, she might actually be living there

The 1871 census is indexed as Holmfield but actually reads Holmfirth on the image.

If she was Mary Green, daughter of Benjamin & Sarah, she was living in Holme in 1841, details if you want them

Thank you Barbara. Yes, she was a Green and I wouldn't mind the details please.

I was trying to find her parents by way of the earlier census. Thank you very much for you help.

Hi Linda,

Looking again, I think that was the wrong Mary, she was only 10 months old in 1841 and I think she was still unmarried later.

Have you not got the marriage cert for Charles Fish & Mary Green?  That would give her father's name and occupation.  You would need it really, to check details.

There's a Mary Green aged 4 i n 1841 and 14 in 1851 living in Honley, parents David (woollen weaver) and Fanny, which is a better match for her age in later census.  Honley is about 4 miles from Holmfirth

1841 HO107/1274/2 fol.62 p.32
Town Head, Honley, Yorkshire
GREEN
Benjn.  60 Clothier
Ann      55
Edwin  15
David   30
Mary     4

1851 HO107/2292 fol.34 p.7
Church St, Honley
GREEN
David  head m 40 Woollen Weaver  Honley Yorks
Fanny  wife  m 34                       Lancs Manchester
Mary    dau      14 Billy Piecer
Ann        "        10 Scholar
Ellen      "          6      "
Emma    "          3
Adam     "          1
all children b. Honley

Wondering if they're all related as the first family I was looking at in Holmfirth had head Benjamin and he was a clothier too, perhaps David's brother?

Thanks Barbara, I am going to print it all off and wade through it later with a cuppa.

Your help is much appreciated.
