Hi, Barbara and welcome to Rootschat!

I've been told that there have been published lists of monumental inscriptions for Hawick but that they are like gold to the owners and it is virtually impossible to obtain copies.

I hope that someone who owns copies will see this thread and do some look-ups for us!  (I, too, have family who are buried in Hawick.)

May I ask where you purchased the CD for Selkirk?  Thanks!

Regards,
Josephine

Hawick MIs were produced by Hawick Archaeological Soc.about 1963and known as Transactions. Ian Landels is well known in Hawick and should put you right.Unfortunately a lot of the information recorded was only up to 1855 which means 150 yrs still needing recorded.
I transcribed the 3 Selkirk MIs but you can can get many other local border MIs on CDs and booklets through www.bordersfhs.org.uk web site. Recent publications include Bowden,Weirhill Melrose,Melrose Abbey Kelso Cavers etc.
The records office now in Hawick called the HUB will have copies for you to see if necessary.
Hope this helps

Just back from Hawick where I bought a copy of "Hawick Town Trail."

Page 6 says: "If you are trying to trace Hawick Ancestors who might be buried at St Mary's, there is a complete inventory of the kirk's graves in the Public Library."

Googling returns :

Hello

I'm don't know if these memorials are on-line, sorry.

There's several other graveyards in Hawick.

I've been round Wellogate Cemetery (it's large) looking for Tweedies and found several  stones for my own Tweedie relatives; I can definitely say that I've not found a William or a Robert Tweedie. [My Tweedies left Peeblesshire between 1851 and 1856 for Roberton before moving to Wilton ca 1863.]

If it's of any help/interest I downloaded a birth certificate for a Sarah-Ann Tweedie 11 October 1865, whose father was William and mother Jemima Wilson, Sarah-Ann isn't a relative of mine.

The 1851 census of Wilton parish returns no Tweedies, but there are four in the 1851 Census of Hawick parish: Joseph 8, Sarah 33, William 33, all born England and a William 57 born Biggar at a different address.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Walter, When I went in 2005 I searched the records at Hawick. I think they have the place just off to the right as you come in to town. At the time I was new to family history and didn't realize I needed to look for cemeteries their.
I will look at my tree and see if any of these are in mine. Father Williams was a Plumber in 1912 in Galashiels born abt.1849 Stow . Son Bookeeper same address 9 Meigle  Galashiels also born their. I am also looking for the mother Mary Ann Kerr B abt 1855 in Hawick.
What does ca. stand for and the CD's do they have all the names of people in the cemeteries, also where do I find information about cemeteries in Galashiels? Don't want to seem dumb but......
Thanks, Gala Girl (Lass)
