This is my first post so I hope this is how it's done! I'm looking for my great grandfather Charles Wooderson who MAY or MAY NOT have been born in Carlisle in 1809 or 1815. He is said to bhave worked as a shoemaker and as a waterman in Surrey and was transported to Australia in 1832. Thanks for your help Girtbysea

The info you obtained on Charles Wooderson (where he was from, height, special features, crime committed etc) was it info by way of the Ships passenger list..........
ANDROMEDA left Portsmouth, England 17th November 1832...arrived Sydney, Australia 11th March 1833...183 convicts on board The question is..........did the convicts go to Portsmouth or did the ship come to them? ie Portsmouth sail around the coast and then up the Thames to London and then onwards to Oz?
Or did you obtain the info from the National Archives .......... http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/
Did Charles commit the crime alone ? did he have an accomplice? where did you get your info and what did it actually state?
If that was the ship that Charles was transported on...........email the Surrey records office and see if they can help.........they will advise you and tell you what they have before it costs you a penny

Thanyou once again.
No sure of information source. Much of it came from a family member so I will check with her. Anything I have found personally came from the passenger list.
What would the significance of the port of departure be? I think the ship sailed from Portsmouth.
I know very little about the crime. The only description was 'street robbery'.
Clearly the more I know, the more I don't know. I was hoping someone would have access to the Watermen and Lightermen data as that may show birthplace and parents names. I'm beginning to think he fabricated quite a lot of his personal information.
Happy hunting

This is where they held those (approx 3 months, to assess where they would be transorted to?) to be transported in the period of history that this post refers...........
MILLBANK PRISON
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millbank_Prison
http://www.victorianlondon.org/prisons/millbank.htm
The website that Meliora has given you http://www.parishregister.com/ appears to be a good site for watermen and it is free to search for the name, unfortunately it comes up blank! ............
I assume that Charles was married in Australia.....if so? what was his wife's name? only a Charles Wooderson married a Ann Pearsall on the 16th Dec 1828 or the 20th Dec 1828 (depending on what source you use) at St Alphage, Greenwich, Kent Greenwich isn't a million miles away (just a couple) and is on the banks of the River Thames.........
Place a post in the Emigrants to Australia section and ask for detail of Charles Wooderson arriving in Sydney in 1833 and did any female Wooderson's arrive in Sydney/Oz over the next few years..........many wives joined their convict husbands in time and were given assisted passage.....
Regards Bryant
