Help reading death entry
« on: Thursday 21 February 08 10:34 GMT (UK) »

The attached is part of the death entry for Alexander Leith, who died on 10 Feb 1868 in Charleston, Nigg.

It looks to me as if his parents are -
John Leith  Barber
Fraser Leith, ms Park

Fraser seems a rather unusual name for a female.

What do you folks think?

The name is unusual for a woman, but not impossible. I had a great-aunt whose given name was Stewart.

Thanks Isabel & Monica,

I didn't know about Isabella, so that's something new.

First time I've come across Fraser as a female first name as well.

Amazing what we find when we start digging ! !

I would guess it probably refers to a church. I've seen a ref. on google to:

Also in 1721 the first Episcopalian meeting house, St Pauls, was built (Aberdeen).

IGI batch codes also refer to it, although records seem scant (at least on IGI, you might want to double check on SP or other sources):

(Saint Paul)   C100061     1720-1737

Regards.

See  http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/adsdata/PSAS_2002 for a history of St Paul's Episcopal Chapel, Aberdeen.

My apologies for forgetting to add the rest of the website address.  Piglet has the correct one.

Hello

Can't find any other children on the IGI

Only birth for a Faser Park in Scotland from 1730 to 1790 is a 'submitted' entry which gives 2 different b.  abt 1758 and another entry abt 1764.  Spouse is Andrew Milne whom she married on 22 Jan 1785 , in Old Machar Aberdeen..  The IGI has an extracted entry for 1 child to this couple -   Margaret Miln or Milne ( there are 'submitted entries giving the same date.  Her name is down as Miln and Milne  ) ch.  on 28 Feb 1786 at Foul Moon, Old Machar Aberdeen.

? So she was possibly a widow?  Can't find a marriage on the IGI for John Leith and Fraser Park.

Thanks Steve & Isles,

From the sketch map, it looks as if it was somewhere to the left side of Gallowgate heading towards Aberdeen College.

Must see if I can dig up an old map of that area and go and have a look next time I'm in Aberdeen.

Thanks again.

Cheers

Hello Jim

Don't bother digging out a map - be lazy like me and go to

http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/aberdeen_sw.html

Then from the graphic index select the map LXXV.11.8   and use the control to click down into the image.  At the bottom right hand corner of that map is St Pauls Episcopal Church clearly shown.  If you do a right click with your mouse, you'll be able to save what you can see on to your PC.  Any problems - PM me

Regarding the christian name Fraser - On my wifes side we have a female with the christian name Stewart - her mothers surname was Stewart.

Regards,  Steve   :O)
