Hi Susan
More circumstantial evidence there - her father's first names being Thomas Clement - pointing very firmly in the expected direction. I would imagine she gave him the surname Hill to appear more respectible or perhaps she didn't know he was actually a Dunbar??

I think you're luckier than the vast majority of illegitimate births - you have the name of the father actually confirmed on the birth certificate. And it confirms what that yonder peasant found in the 1871 census. We know Frances wasn't Col Dunbar's wife as he was still living with Caroline in 1871 and in 1881 Caroline was still around (although, perhaps tellingly, not in the same household as the colonel)
I think the two certificates confirm what we thought, and I'm confident that the census and baptism data that we found do relate to the right Frances M Hill

That's really exciting confirmation Susan. Being a Colonel (and a gentleman ) there must be records of Thomas Clement Dunbar - you could pop over to the Armed forces board for advice.

Neither of the colonel's two sons was old enough to have fallen in love with Frances who was 29 in 1871 - the younger son, Clement, was only 1month old at that time! As with many of these family stories, there's an element of truth but the detail gets distorted. But it's there in black and white on the birth cert.

Hi Susan
I don't think there was any confusion on our part, after the initial skirmishes - she was always Frances HILL, and the father of her illegitimate child was a DUNBAR, and I think all the information you were given was on this basis. It's all panned out pretty well, considering!
