Got the marriage cert for Frances Clementina Hill no Dunbar on it though.he father was Thomas Clem Hill rank or profession gentleman.
Not a lot of help but will see what her birth cert say`s when it arrives.

Hi Susan

More circumstantial evidence there - her father's first names  being Thomas Clement - pointing very firmly in the expected direction. I would imagine she gave him the surname Hill to appear more respectible or perhaps she didn't know he was actually a Dunbar??

Well birth cert arrived today and I am non the wiser(not the brightest)but think you may be right about the older Frances.
Thomas clement DUNBAR colonel in army(father)
Frances Margaret Hill surname and maiden name of mother.
I understood the Dunbar to be the mothers maiden name and his Hill.
As you say doesn't look like he was a gentleman in the context that we mean it (lol)
Where do I go from here.

I think you're luckier than the vast majority of illegitimate births - you have the name of the father actually confirmed on the birth certificate. And it confirms what that yonder peasant found in the 1871 census. We know Frances wasn't Col Dunbar's wife as he was still living with Caroline in 1871 and in 1881 Caroline was still around (although, perhaps tellingly, not in the same household as the colonel)

I think the two certificates confirm what we thought, and I'm confident that the census and baptism data that we found do relate to the right Frances M Hill

Just been in touch with the cousin who gave me the info(her part of the tree really) she says she was told that he was the younger son who fell in love with Frances (servant) we are just surprised that it was passed down by word of mouth with no metion at all about him being marriedGives me a bit more to work on though.

That's really exciting confirmation Susan. Being a Colonel (and a gentleman  Grin ) there must be records of Thomas Clement Dunbar - you could pop over to the Armed forces board for advice.

Neither of the colonel's two sons was old enough to have fallen in love with Frances who was 29 in 1871 - the younger son, Clement, was only 1month old at that time! As with many of these family stories, there's an element of truth but the detail gets distorted. But it's there in black and white on the birth cert.

Hi Susan

I don't think there was any confusion on our part, after the initial skirmishes  - she was always Frances HILL, and the father of her illegitimate child was a DUNBAR, and I think all the information you were given was on this basis. It's all panned out pretty well, considering!

Still looking for help with this family and can`t even find them on the 1871 census even with the piece numbers given by yonder peasant, tried every thing I can think of and even got 2 other people to look. What we have been told is that Thomas may have been a twin and if this is correct HE show on 1871 census.
Any help will be more than appreciated.

Ancestry has them indexed as Dunton, but the reference quoted by yonderpeasant works if you leave all the boxes blank

Thomas Henry D Hill's birth was registered in Camberwell registration district in the Sept quarter 1877 under reference 1d 782. If he was a twin one would expect another Hill to be registered on the same page. There isn't one, nor on the pages either side.
